Tyrol / South Tyrol Itinerary Suggestions

I'm planning a trip with my family (including two small children ages 2 and 4) to Germany and Austria and debating whether we should add in South Tyrol, specifically Ortisei, as well. We are spending 3 nights at Eibsee Hotel which came highly recommend for families. Trying to decide if Ortisei (2 nights) to Zillertal (1 night) to Salzburg (2 nights) is doable or if we should skip Ortisei in favor of staying longer in Zillertal. I want to feel like we got to experience Austria and the scenery properly, but South Tyrol just looks so beautiful and is relatively close so I find it very tempting! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Where are you starting and ending this trip? Rental car or public transportation? What time of year?

FYI. We love all the places you mention.

The Zillertal warrants more than a single night no matter what. That’s not even a full day there. Same with Ortisei and Salzburg, as 2 nights gives you one full day.

This is a very tough one, if it were my trip, as I LOVE the Dolomites. No matter what, I’d try to split your 5 nights between no more than 2 places. If seeing Austria is your main goal, drop Ortisei. 2 nights Zillertal and 3 in Salzburg, but include a day visiting St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang via Lake Ship on the Wolfgangsee.

Thanks for your reply! We are starting/ending in Munich and will be renting a car (not our first choice but seems like the best/most flexible option). We are travelling first 2 weeks of October. I know that the Dolomites really warrant their own trip, but again just so tempted due to the proximity! Love the St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang suggestions as those were also on my list of potential sites. Anything you would recommend in Zillertal or where to stay? We prefer smaller towns with access to hiking/outdoor activities as much as possible. Thanks again!

Please bear always in mind that you are traveling with two toddlers. It is unlikely that they will enjoy the beauty of a mountain area as you may do. Forget mountain hikes and visiting architecture in a city.

My little grandkids stayed in a family resort for a few days and enjoyed it very much. You can do some half-day trips from there.

If you go by car special seats and seat belts are mandatory for your kids.
