Hi all,
I will be traveling to the Burgenland area as part of a heritage trip to Wolfau where my great-grandfather lived before emigrating to the US and am looking for recommendations how to spend two to thee days getting to know central and southern Burgenland. I plan on visiting a few of the castles in the area, including Gussing and Lockenhaus, and I’ve also been told to visit Mariasdorf and Reichnitz. Any other recommendations how to spend my time exploring this part of Austria are greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
If you do end up with the time given your proposed itinerary, I would heartily recommend visiting the province capital of Burgenland, the town of Eisenstadt and see its famous chateau, Schloss Esterhazy. If you're into classical music, the Schloss was the residence of J. Haydn. Esterhazy was his patron.
Burgenland itself is different from the rest of Austria as it was traditionally and culturally Hungarian, evidence of which is plain to see, eg. the villages.
Burgenland went to Austria after WW1, another piece of lost real estate Hungary endured with the collapse of Habsburg monarchy in 1918.
Thanks! We may be able to do that once we leave Vienna for southern Burgenland.
The village of Wolfau is directly on the border with Steiermark (Styria), so I would imagine this location is a blend of the two. I'm sure you know that Burgenland is the smallest region of Austria (aside from Vienna) and known for the Neusiedlersee, wine and spas.
A great way to experience the culture would be to visit as much as possible the local Buschenschank in the area - these are picnic-style food venues run by wineries which do not serve hot food, but sliced meats, cheeses, salads and of course wine. These are similar to a Heuriger, also run by wineries, but the difference is that Heurigen serve hot food as well. Anyway, Buschenschank are a symbol of the area and I see this one nearby - http://www.buschenschank-hoefler.at/cms/index.php?hr4hsapn-h52r-s0t7-egzz-hop6ioaajtf7-100712105438 - as an example. You can also use a search function on this website and search for Buschenschank in Southern Burgenland - https://www.burgenland.info/en/heuriger-and-buschenschank
Definitely has a glass for two of Uhudler, a rare wine very famous and specific to Southern Burgenland.
Emily,
Thank you for those recommendations. That is the type of experience I hope to find.
