Two nights between Munich and Vienna

Hi everyone,

We will be arriving in Munich at 1:50 pm at the end of September during Oktoberfest and leaving from there three weeks later, tickets purchased. We need to be in Vienna two days later and need to decide where to stay in between for one or both nights.

Ideally, we would go straight through to Vienna but after such a long flight, that does not seem practica (and who knows if our plane will be on time)l. We don't have any interest in Oktoberfest nor the inflated prices. Our Munich time will be at the end of the trip.

We could spend the first night in Munich and head to Vienna the next day. We could go to Salzburg but we don't have any interest in Mozart or SOM. Of course there are other things to do there but we're wondering if someone has other ideas where to stay for one or both nights. We've also thought of Berchtesgaden to get well rested. One complication is we are vegetarians and need a city with restaurants that can feed us.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Salzburg is the closest city where you can get veg food from Munich and not a long drive .

Salzburg is beautiful! We haven't been to Berchtesgaden but recently talked with friends who loved it. We spent a couple of nights in Bad Ischl and made a day trip to Hallstatt. We'd highly recommend those places as well. Since you'll be staying in Munich at the end of trip, I'd advise heading out of there to someplace relatively close for your two nights. We (and our friends mentioned above) loved Passau. You don't mention whether you'll be driving or using public transportation, which would play into your decision.

Thanks for the replies. We're thinking of taking trains everywhere since we have so few in the US. Prague comes after Vienna. We assume having a car in big cities would be a hassle.

I guess it depends on your arrival time, but it's not a big deal to land at MUC and then use trains to get to Vienna the same day. A couple of years ago, I had the hair-brained idea of doing a 5-day trip (travel included) to Vienna because I wanted to see my favorite conductor (85-year-old Nikolaus Harnoncourt!) direct his orchestra one more time, but I had only a very limited number of vacation days to do it. It was at the height of the European air carrier strikes, so I feared a connection in Europe would leave me stranded far away from Vienna. I flew into Munich on Delta in the morning, walked over to the train ticket machines, bought a ticket, and headed to Vienna. In less than 6 hours after landing at MUC, I was walking past the Staatsoper in Vienna. AND it's pretty cheap if you leave MUC after 9 am, use a Bayern Ticket to get to Salzburg, and then hop on the Westbahn train to Vienna.

By the way... I learned a 5-day trip to Europe isn't so bad. I've done it 4 times since then!

I have a slightly different idea. Going a little northeast from Munich to Nuremburg. I found this city to be really lovely. Check it out on the internet and see what you think.

I would choose Salzburg. No interest in Mozart or SOM necessary to enjoy a beautiful small city.
