Two lessor traveled museums in Vienna

I am not much of an art museum kind of guy. I really enjoy natural history museums and military history museums. Vienna has two good ones.

A lot of the military history of Europe took place in Austria. The Museum of Military History covers all of it. WW I started with the assassination of the Arch Duke Ferdinand of Austria. The museum has the car he was riding in and his blood stained uniform and a great exhibit on WW I.

The Museum of Natural History is very good with an excellent dinosaur exhibit. For us one of the high points was the very good restaurant on an upper floor. A very nice place with table service. Not the typical snack bar of American museums! A great place to get off your feet and have a beer, wine, or coke lite!

If you decide to visit the Military History Museum , which is , indeed , fascinating , be aware that most of the descriptive information is in German . By doing some preparatory reading of the underlying history , you will greatly enhance your experience.

Two very lessor museums in Vienna are the Globe and Esperanto Museums. Both are small museums housed in the same building. Globe has a stunning collection of everything related the round maps, and Esperanto is everything you wanted to know about the language that didn't quite catch on.

Thank you, Robert, for mentioning the Third Man Museum--what a labor of love that is! Much as I love the movie (love is probably not a strong enough word, actually bit of a fanatic) and was thrilled to see everything relating to it, I was also quite impressed by the exhibits about life in post-war Vienna, learned a lot more about that difficult time.

It's on my agenda to see the Museum of Military History, couldn't fit it in on my recent return but it's a definite for next time.

I am sworn to go to the military history museum to see the Archduke's car and uniform for my sons, who are history fanatics, but it's not my interest at all.

I'm looking forward to the Secession and the Falschermuseum, a museum of art forgeries. I'm a huge art nerd and that's my primary focus when I travel. I'll be ticking another Vermeer off the list on this trip! I've seen about half of them. Also excited about the Breugels at Kunsthistorichesmuseum, the Bosch at the Gemaldegalerie at the Akademie, and all the Secession-era stuff in various museums, including the Klimts.
