Has anyone been to Kreuzenstein Castle or Liechtenstein Castle near Vienna? They are listed on some "guided tours", but I am more interested in seeing them without tagging along with a tour group.

My kids have been, but not me.
Kreuzenstein can only be seen by a guide, but you can reach it on your own by public transport (but not very easily). See this link. You will take the S3 train for any number of stops on the S-bahn line (Hauptbahnhof, Rennweg, Landstrasse-Wien Mitte, Praterstern, etc). 28 minutes later you arrive at the stop for the castle which is called Leobendorf-Burg Kreuzenstein and then you walk. Use www.oebb.at for schedules.
For Liechtenstein Castle, I think the website explains everything. This castle can also been seen only with a guide.
