Travelling From Innsbruck to Ljubljana Slovenia?

My family will be in Unnsbruck in mid-August and we want to spend a few days visiting Ljubljana while in the area. Do you recommend we take a bus? Train? Or would it be better to rent a car and drive leaving the car in Slovenia? We are looking for a fairly direct and economical mode of transportation. Any suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks

There are trains at 8:24 and 12:24 that will get you there in 6 hours with a change or two.

You don't need a car for the city of Ljubljana and you can easily daytrip from there to Lake Bled by bus. If you want a car to explore rural areas more thoroughly, then it's cheaper to pick it up and drop it off within one country.

How to Look Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the DB train schedule link and tips for using it.

Thanks for the help. Are there inter-city buses that run between Innsbruck and Ljubljana as well or just train travel?

use rome2rio.com:

By train, probably you'll go through Villach/Klagenfurt Austria - which is a wonderful place to break up the trip and spend a day or so if you can!

These towns are situated on the Wörthersee, a beautiful lake resort with stunning scenery and some important sites to encounter. If you are interested in classical music, you might want to visit Gustav Mahler's composing hut that is right near the lakefront.

Have done most of this route: if you want to be able to explore--you'll go past the super-scenic Grossglockenerhochalpstraße, for example--take a car. If you want to do the drive in the Julian Alps in Steves' guidebooks, which I highly recommend, you'd need one for that, too. But you wouldn't need/want a car in Lj, though. You also don't want to rent a car in one country and return in another, as it doubles (or more) the price.

We stayed in Bled instead of Lj, used the car for the Alps drive, returned it in Villach, and hopped back on the train.

My family caught the train from Worgl to Ljubljana last October. Nice scenery and only 2 easy train changes. We looked at renting a car, but the train was cheaper and more convenient as we would have had to pick the car up in Kitzbuhel. We spent a fabulous week in Ljubljana and hired a car there for 3 days. It was very cheap and easy to do. We returned the car each evening as parking can be difficult in Ljubljana. The old town is small and easy to walk around. You would not need a car unless you are going to other parts of Slovenia.
