Traveling by train from Zurich to Munich in January

After a week in the Alps in Switzerland, we will have 6 days to travel by train from Zurich to Munich the first week of January 2015.
After a little research and input on the the rs travel forum I have come up with a possible itinerary:

Zurich - Lindau : 2.5 hours (4 trains) 2 nights in Lindau
Lindau - Mittenwald: 4.5 hours (3 trains) 2 nights in Mittenwald
Mittenwald - Munich: 2 hours (1 train) 2 nights in Munich

I have also considered 1. Zurich, Innsbruck, Munich
2. Zurich, Mittenwald, Salzburg, Munich
Any comments and suggestions would be welcome. Thank you.

Lindau is a very charming town but I probably wouldn't want to spend two nights there. Was there any particular reason you wanted to spend time there? I would be more inclined to choose the Zurich-Innsbruck-Salzburg-Munich option. It's a direct train from Zurich to Innsbruck and then you could do a side trip to Mittenwald from there.

After a week in the Alps, you perhaps want something a little un-alpy, so Lindau gets points for that.
I see the point about 6 days in Lindau may be too much chilling out for some people.
Salzburg is nice, but a big detour. Look up how long it takes to get from Zürich to Salzburg by train.
My recommendation, based on the assumption you want something other than Alps at this point.

  • Zürich - Konstanz. 2 nights, this is a nice walkable lakeside town. Do not miss a day trip to Mainau island (local bus from Konstanz station). If time, half day trip to Stein am Rhein by train.
  • Ferry across the lake (Bodensee) to Meersburg. train along lakeside to Lindau. 1-2 nights Lindau. This is a smaller walkable lakeside town on an island.
  • Train Lindau to Munich, 2-3 nights Munich

P.S. Why is this posted under Austria?
