Travel from Vienna to England

I am planning to take Rick's tour that ends in Vienna and will go from there to visit friends in England - Atherstone by name. Is there is train that goes from Vienna to England or would bus or plane be the better way to go. Manchester would be the closest airport.

Why would you want to take the train or bus all that way????
Fly into Manchester. There are quite a few flights to choose from.

ETA: for giggles I looked at a random date on dbahn. It would take anywhere from 17+ hours to 20+ hours to get there by train. With, of course, multiple train changes, not to mention station changes in Paris and London.

The best way would be to fly. And probably cheaper, too.

Hi,

If you are considering the flying option, be advised that there is also a way doing the entire route by train. I've done it a few times most of it the way (Paris to Vienna). Very easy logistically, no multiple changes unless you are willing to put with that.

Suggestion A. Take the night train Wien Hbf to Munich Hbf., (I don't like rushing, this is where I give myself up to 2 hrs for breakfast and relaxing),

Then take the ICE Munich Hbf to Frankfurt...direct. Then you have over one hour break/lunch at the Hbf.

Next, take the Frankfurt Hbf to Paris Est, direct, arriving just before 5 pm.

At this point I prefer staying the night at Gare du Nord. but if you're willing to push it, walk over from Est to Nord to catch the evening EuroStar to London. Time wise it can be done.

No multiple changes.. ONLY twice at Frankfurt Hbf and Munich Hbf with plenty of time to spare since I tailor the routes and dep times.

There is another night route going from Wien Hbf to Düsseldorf Hbf, but then you need to change to Frankfurt to catch the direct train to Paris, then the EuroStar to London.

Europe is large and the distance from Vienna to Atherstone is 1,000 miles. You want to fly, which will be cheap and take about 2 hours, unless you really like the idea of sitting on a bus or train for 20-24 hours.

The incomparable Man fro Seat 61 has a section on the options for getting from Vienna to London by train: https://www.seat61.com/Austria.htm#Vienna He describes the route starting from London, but you can reverse.

You then need to get from London. If you mean Atherstone, Warwickshire (and not Atherstone, Somerset), then that town has a station with trains from London Euston. But I am sure your friends can advise on getting from London.

P.S. there is also a video about getting from London to Vienna by train: https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=UUvagRZi_ro7U3yKsgCkvP1A&v=u2MlMk9j2vM

The train connection between Vienna and London with the least number of changes, i.e. two, is the following:
Vienna (departure 6:50am) - Frankurt (Main) - Brussels - London (arrival 7:57pm)
That is a trip of about 14 hours.

The cheapest direct flight from Vienna to London I could find is $50 (as of now, arbitrary date in June).

You won't get a train ticket for that price, not to mention that you save about 10 hours of travel time.

At the end of the GAS tour in Vienna in 2016 I, too, headed for London. I flew, bought my airline ticket well ahead and think I paid about 50-60€. I compared prices on the Low Cost Carriers vs the main line carriers and wound up on British Airways for almost the same price as the cheaper airlines. Be sure to check all your options and purchase well ahead for best prices.

I'm fairly conversant with the Atherstone (Warks) bit as it is one of the stations which my trains call at.

If you arrive in London at St Pancras International by Eurostar from either Paris or Brussels you are a 10 or 15 minute walk from Euston Station from whence the trains to Atherstone originate. There is a train every hour (mostly) and, except for early morning and late evening when they run via Northampton and are considerable slower, they are fast - up to 110 mph on most of the route - and only stop a very few times, at Milton Keynes Central, Rugby, Nuneaton and Atherstone on the run up to Crewe. Same again on the return. Travel time 74 minutes, no changes.

If the train leaving Euston has eight coaches you must sit in the front four as the platform at Atherstone is short and only the front 4 are accommodated. If it is like most trains to Atherstone though, it will only have 4 coaches.

If you are landing at Birmingham Airport (previously known as Birmingham International, still has as many international flights but they though leaving out International sounded better - who knew??) it is more difficult as there is no direct service. BHI (the code of the airport station) to Coventry then a tiny one car train two stops hourly to Nuneaton then the same train from London one stop, or BHI to Rugby and the same train from London. Neither particularly good.

Manchester isn't much better. Manchester Airport to Crewe for half an hour, then a change and 90 minutes on the same London train returning to London from Crewe, but it is a stop all stations train between Crewe and Atherstone, calling at 8 stations on the way.

Good luck either way.

Please ask for additional help....
