Travel from Salzberg to Rothenburg ob der Tauber

I would like to travel from Salzberg to Rothenburg ob der Tauber on October 8, 2015. Does anyone have suggestions for alternatives to the straightforward train route out of Salzberg? There is no indication of anything abnormal on the bahn.de site for that date. But I 'm anticipating problems getting across the border from Salzberg into Germany.

Would it make sense to try for a bus or taxi from Salzberg to Freilassing Bahnhof in Germany? It doesn't look very far but I don't know if the border crossing makes it problematic.

Presumably, the border crossing from Salzburg to Munich should be open since date of 4 October was the end date. If the border is closed going from Salzburg to Munich, then try some where else by train. There is more than one crossing point unless the entire Austro-German border is going to be closed. Passau is another crossing point. Take the train Salzburg to Passau. There you can change to Munich via Platting or to Rothenburg via Nürnberg, a couple transfer are required. I've crossed at Freilassing and also at Passau, depending on the type of train .

You can also cross the border (I've done it) from Braunau am Inn, Austria, to Simbach, Germany. That crossing point is about half way between the Salzburg and Passau crossings, a little more than an hour from Salzburg.

From Simbach, you can go by train to Regensburg via Landshut, then to Nürnberg and Rothenburg.

It's more roundabout, but you can go to Prague and take the Bann IC bus to Nürnberg. That bus seems to be running normally, as are trains from Prague to Germany.

Hint: if you are looking up schedules, use the real name, Salzburg, not Salzberg. You'll probably have better results.

Thank you both for this useful information about alternative border crossing plans. I did read reports that all the Germany-Austria rail border crossings would re-open 4-Oct.

Still, I'm thinking to change my travel route so as to avoid the Germany-Austria border region. I have that flexibility and there just seems to be too many reports of travel delays for my comfort level.

I understand it is relatively easy to take a taxi from Salzburg to Freilassing. It should cost 25 euros; taxi drivers are instructed not to take on board prospective refugees or they will risk untold penalties, but tourists with regular passports should cross the border with just some delay.

At present railway services between Salzburg and Freilassing - and long distance service Salzburg to Munich - are suspended till Oct. 4th but frankly I do not believe the refugee crisis is to be solved in a week.

Why waste 25€ for a taxi. If you're in the old town, bus 24 is running from F. Hanusch Platz to Freilassing. It runs up Münchnerstrasse in Freilassing. If you get off at Lindenstrasse, near Rupurtuskirche, it's about ½ mile walk down Lindenstrasse to the Freilassing Bahnhof (I've walked it several times).
