Transportation - Saltzburg+Bechtesgaden and to Vienna after Salzburg

We plan to stay 4 nights at Salzburg and plan to go Bechtesgaden, Hallstatt, Melk and salzkammergut. On day 5, we plan to go to Vienna. Since there are four of us (3 adults and one teenager), we think it is cheaper to rent a car and also more flexible. Have anyone had experience to rent a car in Salzburg and drop it in Vienna?

Still in the air is the possibility of staying only 3 nights at Salzburt and tried to cover all of the above and go to Vienna on day 4 - is this too aggressive?

I also welcome suggestion with train / public transport if it will be easier and reasonably priced.

Many thanks in advance.

It's easy to get to Berchtesgaden from Salzburg.

)1 There is an hourly bus, the Watzmann Express, RVO 840,, that leaves Salzburg Hbf and makes several stops in town, including Mirabell, before going to Berchtesgaden. The trip takes less than an hour.

2) You can also go by train via Freilassing. That takes a little over an hour.

The trains run all day until late evening; the last bus back to Salzburg is around 6 PM.

An RVO Tagesticket costs cost 10,- euro for an adult and covers not only the round trip bus to/from Berchtesgaden, but also most buses in Berchtesgaden including the bus to Kònigssee and the bus to Salzberg, where the special buses go up the private road (closed to cars) to the Eagles Nest.

A Bayern-Ticket, 26 euro for the first person, 6 euro for travelers 2 - 5, will cover the train round trip plus the same buses in Berchtesgaden as covered by the RVO TagesTicket.

Finally, if you want to take the bus, which is faster to Berchtesgaden, then stay later past the last bus time and come home on the train, you can use a BGL-TagesTicket Bus and Train.for 12,- euro per person. It covers the Waltmann Express to or from Salzburg, or the train via Freilassing, or one each way as well as the same buses in Berchtesgaden as the other two tickets.

I would take one day off of Salzburg and go by bus through the Salzkammergut to Hallstatt, spend the night in Hallstatt, then go by train from Hallstatt to Vienna.

Salzburg and it's immediate vicinity is good for two or three leisurely days on it's own. Salzkammergut is a wide area, you have to decide what you are interested in and where you want to go, some places can be combined with Hallsatt on a long day. Hallstatt is fantastic. There was a construction crane at the water's edge when we were there but it was beautiful nontheless. Berchtesgaden is in the opposite direction. The scenery in the area is very nice but the town itself not worth going out of the way for. Melk is best visited on the way to Vienna, can be combined with a stop in Steyr, a pretty river town.

I would look at reducing your stay at Salzburg to 3 nights and stay at Hallstatt for 1 night. This can be done on the way to Vienna. Hallstatt is such a beautiful town. We fell in love with it so much we cancelled all our out-of-town site seeing so that we could just stay in the town itself...
You could hire a car but we thought the only way to see Europe and its beauty is by train and thats what we did for 13weeks back in 2013. The trains are awesome.
And as per one of the other comments we caught the public bus from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden and we were there before we knew it...
From Salzburg to Hallstatt by train is easy and the Hallstatt station is the opposite side of the lake to the town, so you catch a ferry to get to the town. The ferry is synced with the train so its usually there when the train arrives...

Thank you guys for the response above. The reason we dont plan to stay at Hallstatt is we are worry if the weather is not good the day we stay there. Have seen several several other posts which suggest to go to Hallstatt only when the weather is good.

Anyone had experience with car rental? Is it easy to park other than in Vienna?

We always rent a car if staying in a village or small town (never rented a car in Salzburg but have dropped off in Vienna after picking up elsewhere with no problem). Never had a problem parking in the areas you are interested in. There is a large car park in Hallstatt, I went towards the end of a September when it was fairly quiet and on a beautiful day. Melk we visited easily by train from Vienna after we had dropped off the car.
