Transportation in Zell Am See area

While we are in the Austrian region this September, I am trying to go by train as much as possible, From Graz we are traveling by train to Zell Am See, which we have never seen. Is the public transportation, busses sufficient to get around or will we need to rent a car to see everything. We will probably be there for 2-3 days. Earl

It depends on what you want to do while there.

We had lunch in Zell am See on our way to Hall in Tirol from Salzburg earlier this month. The train station is right on the edge of the compact city (along the shoreline) and seems to be within walking distance to the main walk/shop platz. There is also a fairly robust city bus network from the looks of it.

There are ski lifts that originate on the edge of the city and provide summer transportation into the mountains for hiking.

We also noticed bicycle rentals and at least one Zeller See boat excursion company.

In my humble opinion, unless you want to get way out into the country or mountains, you don't strictly need a car. One car always rent a car locally as well.

BTW - Zell am See felt a lot like Breckenridge or Vail with the addition of a large picturesque lake. Lots of outdoor recreation oriented stores and gear rentals. I understand there's some pretty good white water rafting in the local area as well.
