My husband any myself are planning a trip to Europe in the fall. We are starting out in Vienna then heading to Salzburg and from there we are going to Munich and then back to Vienna. Is it best to buy train tickets station to station or is Europass the best option?
Hi,
In your case I would not use a Pass, not long enough of a trip or zig zag traveling. From Vienna to Salzburg I would go by Westbahn which leaves from Wien Westbahnhof. You board then pay when the conductor comes around. Tickets on Westbahn (great trains) are cheaper, same for Salzburg to Munich.
For Salzburg to Munich or vice versa, a Bayern-Ticket, 28€ for two people, will take you by regional train. It takes only about half an hour longer by regional train. You can purchase the Bayern-Ticket from an automat at the train station. No advance purchase is necessary; it is always the same price and doesn't sell out. It costs 2€ more from a ticket counter.
Thank you both for the information. Is the Westbahn train from Vienna to Salzburg non-stop, or does this train have multiple stops?
The Westbahn train makes a half dozen stops, shown on schedule results at through DB and presumably on their own web site, too.
