Transport from Vienna Hbf to St Stepan's Cathedral

Hello,
We will be staying very close to St Stephan's Cathedral. There will be 5 of us, so I would like to know what the best option for transport from the train station to our accommodation is. Approximately how much would it cost for a taxi (for 5 people plus luggage)? Is the train an option?
Thanks in advance.

You would have to take 2 (maybe 3) taxis depending on how much luggage you have. One taxi would be about 15 Euro.

I'd suggest taking the subway. The U1 line runs from Hauptbahnhof to Stephansplatz. Use wienerlinien.com to help you with public transport planning in Vienna.

Yes someone on here posted about an app - I think the one by that website Emily mentioned, plus one called... "qando".

Looks like it has all the maps and routing, plus seems to be you can buy tickets right on your phone and then show or scan it. I hope this is actually how it works because my biggest stress is always buying the stupid tickets, so if I an get them from my phone then YEAH! Technology!! :)

Yes, I suggest Qando frequently as an app offered by Wiener Linien (Vienna's public transportation system). The problem is that you really need to use it when you are out and about, so that will get expensive if roaming internationally. Honestly, the ticket machines and weekly, daily, etc passes are so easy to figure out, I think that using an app over complicates things.

It is not a big problem using Qando on a foreign phone, although it requires an Internet connection. Free WiFi is nearly available everywhere (train stations, restaurants, cafés, etc.). The city of Vienna has started to provide free WiFi on popular streets and places, too. Using free WiFi you can avoid roaming costs.

Just to clarify - I do think Qando is great, but only as great as you have internet access. It is particularly good for schedules and route planning - I use it several times a day. I would not use it for electronic tickets, however, as the machines are in English and self-explanatory.

Taking the U1 Red line(direction Leopoldau) direct is easy assuming you are traveling the way "Uncle Rick" would suggest with one carryon size case each. Get your tickets from the machines. They take cash or cards. The metro is easy and cheap..no barriers, great signage..you can do it!
I'm assuming you're coming from Huptbonhauf when I gave you the red line directions to Stephanplatz. If you're coming from any of the other stations, you'll need to transfer to the U1 line...again great signage all quick and easy.

If you're coming from any of the other stations, you'll need to transfer to the U1 line

Sorry, that is not correct.

From both "Wien Westbahnhof" (west train station) or from "Wien Mitte" (center train station) you take the metro U3 directly to the center stop ("Stephansplatz"), where line U1 also calls, coming from "Wien Hauptbahnhof" (main train station).

The metro stop "Stephansplatz" is right underneath St. Stephen's Cathedral, so that's the closest point to your hotel you can reach by public transport.

We took the Metro. Very easy and you'll see St. Stephans as you come up the escalator- very convenient!

Maybe worth pointing out that the subway in Vienna is called the U-bahn. If you call it the Metro, you will likely not be understood as Metro is a large grocery store here.

"U-Bahn" stands for "underground train", consequently all stret level entrances are clearly marked with a big blue cube bearing the letter U in white color.

The different lines and their stations are color coded, so it is easy to find and to distinguish:

U1 red
U2 purple
U3 orange
U4 green
U5 (under construction)
U6 brown
