Train travel Vienna to Mauthausen to Salzburg

My husband and I will be traveling from Vienna, stopping at Mauthausen and then continuing on to Salzburg in one day. Will I need to purchase separate tickets from Vienna to Mauthausen and Mauthausen to Salzburg or can I purchase a ticket from Vienna to Salzburg and get off and on at Mauthausen? Also can I purchase a day pass ticket? Thanks!

Interrupting your trip between Vienna and Salzburg is only possible if you have a full fare ticket. Note that Mauthausen is not an intermediate station on the route from Vienna to Salzburg.

You will have to go from Vienna to Linz first using an express train. In Linz you must change to a local train or a bus to go to Mauthausen and back to Linz. Then you continue your journey to Salzburg using another express train.

There are several different combinations between trains, departing either from Vienna main station (Wien Hbf) or Vienna western station (Wien West), and local trains and/or buses to Mauthausen. You must decide what serves you best and buy the tickets accordingly. Express trains from Wien Hbf and Wien West are operated by different companies, i.e. tickets are not interchangeable.
