train travel from Salzburg to Vienna

Date of travel october 29, 2014. It's not clear to me which of the vienna train stations we would arrive at with the Hauptbahnhof not fully operational. We are staying within the Ring near the Opera house. Also, I was planning on buying the tickets for that train the day we arrive in salzburg (Oct. 28). Will that be ok.
Thanks, BT

All the trains from Salzburg arrive at the Westbahnhof. Use West Bahn for the best price as that is how they operate. You can buy the ticket on the train. https://westbahn.at/en/

Yes, Westbahn is the way to go. High speed trains with free wifi. You can buy your ticket on the train, but if you buy in advance at a Tabak (they are everywhere) in town you can save 5 Euros/ticket on the date you are traveling. Trains leave from the main train station in S'burg and arrive at Wien Westbahnhof.

Getting to the First District from there is easy on the U-bahn.

Another question, does westbahn run trains from Munich to Vienna ?? If so, is the ticket purchase procedure the same.

Besides that deal you can also continue to Munich from Salzburg on the train using Meridien trains. You can get a Bayern Ticket for one price of 27 euro for 2 people. It will also give you unlimited travel for the rest of the day on the S-Bahn and U-Bahn and buses in Munich (or for all of Bavaria for that matter).
Railjet offers direct express train service from Vienna to Munich. While more money nominally than Westbahn, if you buy advance purchase nonrefundable tickets you can get a price competitive with Westbahn.

If you are only going between Salzburg and Munich via Rosenheim by train, you can use the Meridian "Guten Tag Ticket" (like the Bayern-Ticket, only 2€ less, but only for the routes of Meridian and BOB) for 25€ (21€ 1st person, 4€ each additional). Unlike the Bayern-Ticket, the Guten Tag ticket does not include buses or local travel in the MVV.
