Train travel from Munich (Starnberg) to Graz

We would like to travel by train from Munich (Starnberg area) to Graz in September. In Graz we will be renting a car to travel around Austria for approximately 2 weeks. When should I buy the tickets? Any ideas to save money? Earl

There are 6 connections between Munich and Graz per day (every two hours). Two of them are direct (no changes), the other four require one change. The travel time is 6 hours.

As of now there are still "Sparschiene" bargain tickets available (€29).

My suggestion is to take the direct train connection to Vienna, or you can transfer once in Wien Hbf, ie, Munich Hbf to Wien Hbf, then change to Graz Hbf. I've taken that route.

That would add about 70 minutes travel time, not to talk about being less scenic than the shorter routes.

Buy your ticket asap and include the Starnberg-Munich leg in your booking - the price will be the same as for Munich to Graz. Book either at www.bahn.com or at www.oebb.at (compare: some times cheap tickets are sold out at one of the two websites but not on the other).

"...if taking the night train from Munich to Wien...." True, point well taken. Doing this night option is exactly what I have planned in June to squeeze out an extra travel day. Graz is on the itinerary too.

I want to thank everyone for their thoughts. We have driven across Austria before. From our previous trip, we really enjoyed Graz. My wife wants to go back. But this time by train. I don't know why Rick Steves ignores the Graz area. We have found it very exciting. I have found that when traveling to a larger city, our rental stays in the parking lot and we use public transportation. So I am trying to go by train as much as possible, From Graz we are traveling by train to Zell Am See, which we have never seen. Is the public transportation, busses sufficient to get around or will we need to rent a car to see everything. Maybe I will need another(different) post. Earl

I like Graz, it's different and have done two day trips there, still not enough,. The city is highly recommendable, regardless of what RS thinks about it.
