Train Travel

Hello All,

I am becoming quite confused regarding train travel. We will travel via train from Munich to Salzburg, and then from Salzburg to Vienna on another day. Can anyone please provide some insights regarding the fastest method of train travel between these destinations?

Thank you very much!

The RJ trains (RailJet) are the fastest trains on the route Munich - Salzburg - Vienna.

Look for "Sparschiene" bargain tickets when booking well in advance. A seat reservation is recommended.

Mike, slightly slower (but cheaper) trains using Bayern tickets (Meridian) from Munich to Salzburg and Westbahn from Salzburg to Vienna. Both can be bought day-of, or Westbahn bought on the train. Check to see whether the time difference is enough for the price difference.

Mike,

Have a look at the Bahn.de website to see all the train solutions on those routes - https://www.bahn.com/en/view/index.shtml .

The trip from Munich to Salzburg is relatively short with direct trains taking 1H:45M. There appear to be Savings Fares currently listed at €25 PP.

For the trip from Salzburg to Vienna, there isn't much difference in travel time between the RailJet and Westbahn. Choose whichever one fits your schedule and has the best prices at the time. You can buy Westbahn tickets on board, but if you're planning to use a credit card, I believe they only accept Chip & PIN cards. Check their website for details.
