Train travel

My husband and I are traveling from Vienna to Venice with our 18 & 25 year old children. We would like to take the ÖBB nightjet but I’m confused with booking this online. We don’t want to sleep with strangers in our compartment. Any suggestions for selecting the correct booking?

When I select Private couchette compartment it says 3 adults max and up to 5 children. But when I select komfort-ticket nightjet I can change seating preference to a 4 berth compartment. Does that work the same? I want us all together

Also note that booking Nightjet is only for a portion of the journey. You will need to book a separate ticket for Venice to Brenner. The Nightjet booking is Brenner to Vienna. Keep this in mind. And you MAY have to change trains in Innsbruck. A quick look says nearly a 2 hour layover there! There is not going to be any sleeping done on this night train journey. I would not recommend this.

As an aside, my wife and I did night train once before. It is not as romantic or as restful as one would think/hope.

Have a great trip!

The train said it’s straight from Vienna to Venice. I’m not sure where Brenner comes in?

The route on Nightjet gives an itinerary of Venice -Verona-Brenner-Innsbruck with connections in each city. Pretend you are going to book this on ÖBB and see what it tells you. I plugged in a date of mid-May. Nightjet STARTS in Brenner, so you need separate booking on Trenitalia to get to Brenner based on my search.

There are No Services Available for this Section of the Journey
You will need another ticket for the section of the journey Venezia Santa Lucia > Verona Porta Nuova.

That is a mysterious comment. Brenner has nothing to do with it. The Vienna-Venice Nightjet goes to Salzburg, then to Villach, Tarvisio, Udine, the Venice. It never gets anywhere near Brenner Pass.

Sam is correct - I had you going from Venice to Vienna. Just ignore me. I'm not very helpful today.

@Marc: The information you gave is COMPLETELY wrong. I don't know frome where you got it, but it is certainly not from the OeBB website.

https://www.oebb.at/en/
click on "Search connection"
enter date, departure "Wien Hbf", destination "Venezia Santa Lucia"
click "More"
in the section "Connections" set the number of changes to "No changes"
click "Search connection"

The result will show all direct connections - no changes as requested - between Vienna and Venice, i.e. two daytime connections and the NightJet connection.

Sorry Marc, but this also not correct. The same three direct trains (two daytime, one nighttime) go daily in the other direction as well.

Back on topic, I am getting 359.60 EUR for 4 people in a 4-person couchette on June 20. Sound right?

The only way I can get a 4 berth couchette is by selecting “Best price” then selecting couchette under NIGHTRAIN. change seat selection to “4berth compartment”. My price for 4 is €269,60

I don't understand what you are doing. The price Sam cited is correct.
