I plan to travel from Vienna to Durnstein (round trip, same day) in late August/early September. Does anyone have experience with making this trip entirely by train and, if so, do you have any advice or tips? I definitely plan to walk to the Durnstein Castle ruins.

Trip is about 1.5 hrs one way by train and bus. You get the train to Krems and catch a bus to Durnstein. I believe the buses run every hour.

If it were me I would overnight in Durnstein, it is fantastic after all the tourists have left in the evening.

There are also trains between Krems and Durstein-Oberloiben station, but only 3 per day in each direction.
