Train ticket Wien to Budapest with stop in Bratislava

I am trying to book a train ticket from Vienna to Budapest with a six hour stop in Bratislava for sight seeing. I plan on leaving Vienna around 8:30 am take train to Bratislava, store my luggage and tour around the city for 6 to 7 hours then take a late afternoon train to Budapest. I am a little confused by the stations. Does the train from Vienna come into a different station than the train leaves from to Budapest in Bratislava. There appear to be different choices for train stations for arriving trains from Vienna. Can I store my luggage at one of the stations? Is it best to buy 2 separate tickets or one thru ticket all the way to Budapest. Thank you in advance.

I believe they are currently rebuilding the rail bridge over the Danube between the main city and the south side city of Petrzalka. So trains from Vienna only go as far as Petrzalka, where you will have to take public transport to Bratislava proper. You can get trains from Petrzalka to Budapest with connections, or from the main station in Bratislava (Bratislava Hlavna) with direct trains to Budapest Nyugati station. So 2 tickets will probably be required.

I believe they are currently rebuilding the rail bridge over the Danube between the main city and the south side city of Petrzalka. This needs some clarification.

First of all, Bratislava has two major train stations: Hlavna (main) and Petrzalka.

Consequently, there are two different train lines going from Vienna to Bratislava, departing alternating every 30 minutes from Vienna's main train station, one terminating in Bratislava Hlavna on the left (north) side of the Danube river, the other one in Petrzalka on the right (south) side. The train ticket is valid for both. There is a bus connecting the two train stations (#93).

Unfortunately, the route from Vienna to Bratislava's main train station is closed due to construction works on the Slovak side. Service will be restored in about half a year (mid December 2024). Therefore there is only an hourly departure from Vienna at the moment, i.e., currently you can to go to Petrzalka, only.

For going to the city center (stop Zochova) you can to take the bus 93 (or 94) . As far as I can remember - had been there ten years ago -, there is an underground pedestrian tunnel from the Petrzalka's train station to the bus stop of 93/94. On the opposite side of the train station there is a bus stop of line 80 which you may use alternatively.

Here you can find a lot of different maps useful for your visit of Bratislava: https://imhd.sk/ba/maps
The "Day Routes" map is the most useful regarding public transport. Bus route 93 connects the two train stations directly.

Buy in Vienna the special Bratislava Ticket (at the ticket counter!), because this ticket includes free use of public transport in Bratislava. Buy the ticket from Bratislava to Budapest separately.

So my suggestion would be the following: Go from Vienna to Petrzalka, take bus 93 and ride to Bratislava's main train station (Hlavna), store your luggage there, go to the city center for exploring the town (either by public tranport [bus, tram] or by walking [20 minutes]). Return later to Hlavna station for your departure to Budapest.

Using public transport in Bratislava is as easy as in Vienna (the same holds for Budapest).
