Train input please

We are in Vienna in September and will take the trail from Vienna to Lublijana, where we will pick up our RS Croatia tour. Has anyone any experience with this train route and which sight did you book from? I keep getting Railninja as the booking sight and wonder if that is the usual way.
Also, will be flying back to Vienna for our return trip home and would appreciate any airport hotel recommendations. Thanks

Don’t use Rail Ninja. They rip off train ticket buyers by charging sky-high markups for train tickets. Buy directly from the Austrian national train company or a reputable train ticket reseller such as www.TheTrainline.com

The problem with Googling. It sends you first to the outfit that pays them the most to get listed first. Where do they get the money to pay Google? From the unfortunate people who buy tickets from them.

A good rule of thumb when buying train tickets is: Buy from the national railway of the country where the trip starts.

And that is the Austrian Railways (ÖBB) . Their domain is www.oebb.at.

Unfortunately they neglected to buy obvious sites like "Austrianrailways.com" and an unscrupulous bunch from Hong Kong has taken that as an opportunity and set up a set of sights that to the untrained eye look like an official site. This works because people from countries without extensive train networks don't have an idea what an official railway site is supposed to look like.

Rail Ninja have a lot of such fake websites. "Railjets.com" is one. "Norwaytrains.com" is another. In the past they would use stock pictures. With hilarious consequences often, like using a London Underground train as an example of an Austrian Intercity... Nowadays their train pictures are all AI generated, and almost, but not quite. look like trains...

I think that the train part is covered. As mentioned above, only buy from the actual operators of the train not from a third party website.

As for hotels at the Vienna airport, there are two - the NH and Moxy. Neither are memorable or special. Just pick the one that is the cheapest.

I would note, however, that is only takes about 20 minutes by train to get from the airport into the city. Perhaps you might consider spending the night in the city instead.

A few years back I would have agreed that its best to purchase your tickets from the departure train company. The advantage is that if there is a problem with a ticket you can walk into the local departure city ticket office and ..... Well, the odds of needing that convenience are remote, so weigh the presumed convenience against cost.

Check the cost of the tickets at both departure and arrival ends of the trip. If it’s the same or 2 euro more, then sure, use the departure company. But when the departure country website says 60 euro and the arrival country website says 20 euro for the same train ..... which isn’t terribly uncommon .... no, you buy the cheapest. However, when traveling from Austria to Slovenia or Slovenia to Austria and you go to the Slovenian rail company, they send you to OBB as the Slovenian rail company doesn’t sell international tickets.

Also there is always the controversy of the need to buy tickets in advance. If you want to be certain to get the discount ticket that can cost half the price of a full fare ticket, maybe so. For grins I checked the trains from Vienna to Ljub on a Friday. The first Friday when the discount tickets are available is the 25th of this month. The savings is 20 to 40 euro a ticket depending on the train.

And absolutely do get seat reservations when offered. For the 3 euros it’s worth it.

And do downland the OBB app and keep your tickets there. Printed is fine too, but on the train you will look very local and make the conductor's job easier if you hold up your phone screen when he approaches to check tickets.

Ok thanks for the advice and spell check. I was using the OBB sight but having trouble inputting Ljubljana as the end destination. I believe I have it figured out now, thanks to the advice here.
