train information from Krun Germany to Salzburg Austria

Hello, looking for information about train schedules between Krun Germany and Salzbury Austria. Krun is very close to Garmisch-Patenkirchen. Can we make the train connection from Krun or do we need to go elsewhere. Do we need to make reservations ahead of time? We are headed to Salzbury for a day of the 50th anniversary celebrations of The Sound of Music. Thanks. Jean

Please check your spellings. If you mistype one letter in a transport planner you may get no results, or results for a completely different location.

There is no railway station in Krün. There is a bus route 9608 to Garmisch-Partenkirchen which runs around every hour on weekdays but less frequently on Saturday and Sunday - a current timetable is here, but check locally to be certain. For rail services between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Salzburg check both www.bahn.com and www.oebb.at. Reservations are not necessary but you can get significant discounts if you buy ahead of time, and the cheap tickets may still be available on one site if you've sold out on the other. You will always have to change in Munich.

Also compare the cheap web fare with the cost of getting a Bayern-Ticket, which is a day pass that is valid in Bavaria and also just over the border to Salzburg. However, this is not valid on the fastest Inter-City or Railjet trains between Munich and Salzburg.

Thanks so much for your reply. This gives us something to work on and we have lots of time to get it figured out.

Another thing I thought of is that a Bayern Ticket would include the bus from Krün. However I don't know if you'd be able to buy it anywhere in Krün or on the bus. It would be possible to buy one in advance for your travel day if you are near a railway station on your way to Krün, or it would also be possible to buy it in advance online from www.bahn.com.

It looks like the fastest way is by bus to Mittenwald, then by regional train to Innsbruck, then by express train to Salzburg via Kufstein. That would take 3 hrs 40 min. It would be the most expensive route.

Alternatively, you could take the bus to Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Klais Bhf, a regional train to Munich, then the regional Meridian train to Salzburg. That trip could be done with a Bayern-Ticket (28€ for two people). It would take 4 hrs 12 min.

For me, however, the most scenic trip would be to take the 9608 bus north along Walchensee to Kochelsee and change buses in Kochelsee Bahnhof for Bad Tölz. Take the BOB (Bayerische Oberlandbahn, train) from Bad Tölz to Holzkirchen, from there by Meridian to Rosenheim, then by another Meridian train to Salzburg. Total time is only 4 hrs 14 min, and you can also do it with a Bayern-Ticket, and it is the most scenic route you can take.

To find that route on the Bahn website, put in Krün (Gh. Post/Cafe Kranzbach) to Salzburg and use Kochel am See as the Via.
