Noticed starting December 10th there is a Westbahn train from Hauptbahnhof to Salzburg. Is the extra cost to travel Railjet worth it over a Westbahn train?
The RailJet bargain ticket ("Sparschiene") can be cheaper than the Westbahn ticket, but is always bound to a specific train, and can only be booked via the Internet.
The new WESTblue line (effective December 10th) calls not only at "Wien Hauptbahnhof", but on serveral S-line ("Schnellbahn") stops as well, terminating at "Wien Praterstern" (in the 2nd borough, north-east of the city center).
Thanks, The Railjet is now 34 euros, so cheaper on the Westbahn. Are the trains nice on the Westbahn?
I’m sure that for some train times the 19 Euro fare is most definitely there for ÖBB. Railjet, by the way is a type of train, not the name of the company.
Westbahn trains are very nice, double deckers with free WiFi. Austrians don’t do anything half-a&&. Everything is nice.
Thanks again for pointing out this new service. Note that you pick up the Westblue at the underground platforms at Hbf, same as the S-Bahns. Westbahn advertises it as the only "weather protected" boarding of long distance trains at Hbf.
Thanks for alerting me to the new Westbahn route -- used it today and it was great! You can buy tickets on the train or in advance (special rate for 60+ seniors travelling Monday through Thursday, but need to buy those tickets online or at tabacs)
