Train from Salzburg to Vienna

We are traveling from Salzburg to Vienna on May 13 and would like to arrive around 4:30pm (16:30 after having the morning to explore Salzburg). I can't seem to find train tickets that are first class less than $138 per person. Are economy seats on Rail Jet nice? safe? Any recommendations on finding train travel or ways to find a cheaper/safe route?

Take the Westbahn train instead. Just as fast as the Railjet and tickets are like 25.50 EUR and you buy them on the train. 1st class is 44.50.

THANK YOU! Is it pretty easy to figure out 'how to do that' - first time in Austria and remember being in Italy figuring our trains was a little overwhelming! Time schedule online?

2nd class seemed pretty safe to me. Recommend getting the Deutsche Bahn app, even for trains outside Germany it works really great showing time tables and recommends when you might want to pay more for reserved seats (it recommended that once on our trip last year taking many trains and it was a good choice).

I came up with a total of €74,00 for two or about $85 - 2nd class on the OBB is nice as well & you would save €20,00

On OBB we usually sit in the restaurant car - have a beer or glass of wine, the food is pretty good and reasonable and there is a closet where you can put your luggage

Fr 13. May
11:12 Salzburg Hbf
14:05 Wien Hbf

Wien Hbf
WHO IS GOING?
2 × adult
€ 48,00

add € 20,00 for 1st class
add € 6,00 for seat reservation

You do not need to pay extra for first class on this route. No one does that. Austria and it's rail system are very safe. Why do you think it would be otherwise? As suggested already, take Westbahn and buy the ticket on the train. $138 is absolutely extortionate.

There is nowhere in Europe where second class travel is not "safe". And it's not as if there are security guards at the dividing point between first and second class accommodation, anyone who gets on a train can get into any of the carriages.
