train from salzburg to munich

could any of you help direct me in the best way to get from salzburg to munich? Is a train the best way to go? I'm planning our trip for this July with our kiddos and we need to get form salzburg to Munich on the last day to catch our plane out of Munich the following morning. Thanks so much for your help!

Train is best. Use the website of the Deutsche Bahn to buy the tickets (payment by credit card; emailed pdf). I've tried a random date in July and it might come as cheap as EUR 39 for a family.

The train is excellent! One hint from Rick's book. Buy your tickets from DB Deutsche Bahn instead of OBB, the Austrian rail office. There are both ticket offices at the Salzburg train station. Use DB, they gave discounts for groups, you didn't even have to be a family. We visited with four people in a US band traveling in Europe and they got a cheap group ticket. The ride was very scenic, make sure to stay on until the main haufbanhof if you are going to the center of Munich. Have a great time. Hank novato, CA

You can get to Munich even cheaper by buying a Bayern ticket, the regional day pass in Bavaria, which also is valid to Salzburg. Two adults can travel with unlimited offspring for 31 euros. You can buy them in Salzburg station from the red-coloured German rail ticket machines, or in advance from bahn.de.

Note that Bayern tickets are only valid on German Regional Express trains (red-painted carriages) and not on the Inter City (white-painted carriages) or Railjet (mostly black-painted carriages), but Regional Expresses are frequent and much the same speed. Another advantage is that you can also use the Bayern ticket on Munich city buses, trams and U-Bahn to get to your hotel.

With unlimited offspring who are under 15 yo.

German Regional Express trains (red-painted carriages)

I don't want to be pedantic, but for a last minute transfer it might be important to know that the regional trains to Munich are blue since they are operated by the Meridian company.

I've scanned most of you past postings, but I can't find out how old your "kiddos" are. With 7, there might be some older than 14. That will have a big influence on the ticket price. German Rail considers 15 and up to be adults, not eligible for "all your own children free".

What are the ages of your kiddos?

Thank you so much for your help and advice with this! our two oldest will be 15 when we go. The rest are 12, 9, 7,4,2. All of this advice is so, so helpful!

The Bayern-Ticket is valid for (1) one or two adults and all the children/grandchildren of one of them. The second adult could be the spouse, an adult child, or an unrelated adult, or

(2) up to 5 people (any child, unless under 6 counts, as a person).

In the first case you need a 1 or 2 person Bayern-Ticket (for 25 or 31 euro); in the second case you need a Bayern-Ticket for the number of persons, 25 euro for person one and 6 euro for each additional person.

In your case it looks like two 2-person Bayern-Tickets, one for the parents and 3 children over 5 and under 15 , the other Bayern-Ticket for the two older children.

Since there are seven of you over 5, total, you should inquire at the DB ticket counter about a group ticket (6 or more people). I don't know what that fare is, but it might be less than the two Bayern-Tickets.
