Download db navigator app. You can plug in destination and get an idea of your options. Looks like a 2 1/2 hr trip with 1 change.

The best way to go by train from Salzburg to Hallstatt is to go by train, on the line towards Vienna, to Attnang-Puchheim, and from there to go south by train via Bad Ischl to the Hallstatt haltestelle across the lake from Hallstat, and go by boat across lake to the town.

From the Man in Seat 61 website ( https://www.seat61.com/international-trains/trains-from-Salzburg.htm#Salzburg-Austria)

Salzburg to Hallstatt from €9.90... Trains link Salzburg Hbf and
Hallstatt every hour through the day in around 2h35, consisting of 47
minutes from Salzburg to Attnang Puchheim on either an ÖBB railjet
train or double-deck Westbahn train then 1h16 or 1h39 on an ÖBB
regional or regional express train from Attnang Puchheim to Hallstatt.

Fares start at €9.90 if you book in advance and commit to a specific
train with a cheap Sparschiene fare on ÖBB trains.

The full-flex Standardpreis you pay on the day is around €30 if you
use ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) trains or around €23 if you use a
Westbahn train between Salzburg & Attnang Puchheim and then an ÖBB
train. These full-flex fares cannot sell out, they are always
available.

I recommend using www.thetrainline.com to buy tickets because it's
quick, easy, overseas credit cards no problem and it can book both ÖBB
and Westbahn trains. You print your own tickets.

The train arrives at Hallstatt railway station (Hallstatt Bahnhof) on
the east side of the Hallstatter See (Hallstatt Lake). Hallstatt town
is on the west side of the lake, so you need to take a small local
ferry called the Stefanie from Hallstatt Bahnhof (to Hallstatt town,
this sails shortly after most train arrivals and takes 15-20 minutes,
see www.hallstattschifffahrt.at for a timetable. You pay for the
ferry separately at the quayside before boarding, around €3 per
crossing, children under 4 free, children under 14 at a reduced fare.

There is a more scenic alternative: Going by bus #150 from Salzburg to Bad Ischl, and continue your trip by train to Hallstatt.
If you go back the train suggested via Attnang- Puchheim, then you have seen both routes.

You can buy the ticket for the bus #150 on the OeBB website. If you enter Salzburg for the departure and Bad Ischl as destination, and have checked "Direct trips only", the bus connections will be displayed.

You could use the stop-over in Bad Ischl to visit this famous town, maybe buying a "Zauner Stollen" in the eponymous café, a famous kind of cake produced here.

Hello, We are hoping to make this trip from Salzburg to Hallstallt in December. We visited Hallstatt by car many years ago in autumn. Please does anyone know when the Christmas Markets would be in Bad Ischl and Hallstatt? Would the boat still be available in December? Any suggestion on the latest time to start back to Salzburg? Thank you!

In 2009, I went from Salzburg Hbf to Mondsee by bus to see the wedding church from SOM. Then I went from Mondsee to Bad Ischl by bus via St. Gilgen and a change of buses across Wolfgangsee from St. Wolfgang.

Finally, I went from Bad Ischl to Lahn, south of Hallstatt by bus. I choose the bus route from Bad Ischl to Lahn because I was staying in a Privatzimmer up the river from Hallstättersee, and the bus terminal in Hallstatt is in Lahn, closer to my accommodations.

I really enjoyed my trip through the Salzkammergut from Mondsee to Bad Ischl. It took a little more time, but I got to see an interesting part of Austria.
