We are still working on our Innsbruck (Hall in Tirol) to Zell am See to Salzburg itinerary. The ERT seems to be the least expensive ticket. Is it available for train travel on each leg of this itinerary?
Looks like it takes 2 1/2 hours with a departure every hour at 45 past the hour. S1 to Woergl, then REX to Zell am See. Both can be used with an Einfach Raus Ticket.
Look it up at www.bahn.com and click on the "Local transport only" button.
When searching for a train connection on OeBB's website there is a tiny "more" button giving extended search options, e.g. you can put a check mark for ERT tickets, so only ERT-compatible trains will be displayed.
Thanks to both of you. Is it best to use the Austrian train website while we are traveling in Austria? Are prices comparable? Is the ERT available on the German website? Also, can we use the Bayern ticket going from Mittenwald, Germany to Hall in Tirol, Austria?
Why would you want to buy an Austrian ticket from a German website? Only for border-crossing express trains there may be a price difference when searching on either country's website.
As Mittenwald is right at the German-Austrian border, the trip from there to Hall in Tirol is all but in Austria, i.e. the Bayern ticket is not valid. But from Scharnitz, the border town on the Austrian side, the ERT is valid.
Thanks for the correction. We will be in Germany and Austria for 12 days. It looks like the best (and least expensive) tickets (without purchasing advance tickets) for each leg of the trip will be:
1. Bayern ticket from Munich to Mittenwald
2. Bus or taxi to Austrian border town, then ERT to Hall in Tirol
3. ERT from Hall in Tirol to Salzburg
4. Bus and train combo for day trip to Bad Ischl and Hallstatt
It has been many years since we have done any train travel in Europe, as we usually rent a car. We are looking forward to it. Thanks again for all of the help!
- Bayern ticket from Munich to Mittenwald
- Bus or taxi to Austrian border town, then ERT to Hall in Tirol
Why on earth do you want to leave the train to cross the border? The train runs from Munich to Garmisch, to Mittenwald, and continues to Scharnitz, Seefeld, and Innsbruck.
With the Bayern ticket you are fine as long as you are on German soil. After having crossed the border to Austria you are fine with the ERT, which you should have bought in advance (presumably not available from the conductor in the train).
Once we land in Munich we plan to buy the Bayern ticket to Mittenwald where we will spend several days. Since we will be so close to the Austrian border, I thought we could take a bus or taxi to Scharnitz where we would purchase the ERT to Hall in Tirol. Can both types of tickets be purchased the day of travel? Thanks again for your input!
You want to purchase this - https://www.oebb.at/en/regionale-angebote/tirol/regio-ticket-werdenfels.html
Then you can easily get yourself from Innsbruck to Hall in Tirol. The Werdenfels ticket is good because it is a comparable price to the ERT but without the time restrictions.
