Touring around Salzburg area by car, where to stay?

We will be driving around the Salzburg area in May. we travel from Innsbruck and we stay in Hallstatt for a few days then travel toward Munich via the Salzburg area. ( generally doing a 'loop' from south west, then heading north/northwest ) we have about 4-5 days to see the area and visit Salzburg, before moving on to Munich.
We are thinking of travelling from Hallstatt to Berchtesgaden then on to Salzburg. ( then on to Munich)

What should we see and where to stay, particularly with the car and parking in Salzburg. do we base ourselves outside Salzburg and get transport into the city ? for say 1 day tour and spend time in the Berchtesgaden area?

We have thought about the grossglockner road, but may be too south and take up valuable time? ( weather permitting)

we don't mind driving in the country areas but driving/ parking in the bigger cities is avoided ,if possible.

any suggestions welcome

Hi,

For our visits that include Salzburg, we prefer to stay in the Berchtesgaden area, either in Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden or Schonau am Konigsee. A scenic drive in the area is the Rossfeld Panorama Road just above Berchtesgaden. It takes less than 30 minutes to drive from Berchtesgaden to Salzburg. We always park in the underground lot (the Monchburg?) in Salzburg.

We can highly recommend either the Pension Mayringerlehen in Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden (we stayed in 10/06, 10/07 and 9/09) or Guesthouse Friedwiese in Schonau am Konigsee (we stayed in 12/10 and 12/13). Both are hard to beat.

Hello Paul, many thanks for the info. how many days do you recommend to tour Salzburg, we would like to visit the town and the typical 'sound of music' sites ( having grown up on the movie). from your comments I guess you would drive into Salzburg each day?

We do drive into Salzburg and park in the underground lot. To be honest, we spend about 1 afternoon and 1 evening, maybe 2 evenings, in Salzburg itself, so it's not like we go there everyday. Not big SOM fans, so never toured the sites. In the general area are Rossfeld Road, Konigsee boat trip, Jennerbahn cable car, salt mine tours, luge rides, ice caves and Hohenwerfen Fortress In nearby Werfen, Herrenchiemsee palace is 1 hour away, actually midway between Munich and Salzburg/Berchtesgaden.

Hello Paul, thanks for the detail. I will investigate further. when we leave Salzburg area, we head to Munich, thinking of calling into chiemsee on the way to munich ( hope to do this in one day?) then spend the next day in munich, looking around.

how does this sound, for timing?

is there a good spot to stay in/near munich with a car? ( perhaps catch public transport into the city etc)

(at this stage of the trip we would have already looked around oberammagau and innsbruk area)

many thanks

Hi Glenn,

The Chiemsee and Ludwig's Herrenchiemsee palace is easy on the drive from Salzburg or Berchtesgaden to Munich. It's basically the midpoint of the easy, roughly 2 hour drive between Salzburg/Berchtesgaden and Munich. Well worth seeing.

Paul has given you good advice about staying in Berchtesgaden. We spent six days there this fall and could have stayed much longer. We did one day trip the the Salzkammergut (we'd been there before) and one to Salzburg, the rest of our time we spent in Berchtesgaden.

Rick Steves refers to a park and ride at the Salzburg Sud TI in his Vienna, Salzburg and Tirol book. We didn't use it but it seemed like a really easy option if driving into Salzburg from Berchtesgaden. I found it on Google Maps (so I could visualize where we might go before we left) very easily.

If you do visit Berchtesgaden and are interested in Nazi History check out the website thirdreichruins.com before you go. Hitler envisioned Berchtesgaden as being the centre of the new world he was creating, so it holds a lot of Nazi history. The website has a lot of 'then and now' pictures that fascinated my husband.

We considered a day trip through the Grossglockener Pass (we enjoy driving in the countryside so the distance didn't bother us) but there was so much to keep us busy in Berchtesgaden that we decided to save it for another trip.

Definitely save Herrenchiemsee for a stop on your trip to Munich.

we stayed at www.neuwirtgut.at in Anthering, just outside Salzburg. It is on the light rail line so you can take that if you don't want to drive into the city.

Thanks to everyone for the input.

I will be traveling to Salzburg in June with my sister-in-law and my niece. We wanted to stay in a farmhouse b &b. Rick recommends this in his video on Salzburg, but I couldn't catch the name of the B&B he recommends. Any recommendations? We looked at the Bloberger Hof, but they are already booked for the dates we want. Anybody familiar with the Sallerhof B&B?

We also stayed on Moosstrasse this October. We rented an apartment from Haus Am Moos and would highly recommend staying with them. They have several types of room options, free parking, WIFI, and buffet breakfast. Bus 21 stops about a 2 min walk from the front door and takes you right into the downtown. It's easy to access the main highways in and around Salzburg, close to several restaurants, and very quiet.

We have always stayed in Anif. It is a suburb on the southern edge of Salzburg. The last few times we have stayed at a B&B called "Muendlbauer" --(email: office@muendlbauer.at) This B&B is run by Sabine Mayr, a very nice lady, and is in the farmhouse of a working dairy farm that has had the city grow around it. About 50 euro per night for two which includes the some barnyard smells at times when you are outside. She has a pool, and restaurants are within walking distance. There is a city bus stop about 100 m from the house that will connect with many of the city sights. Salzburg is one of the few cities where I have found that the "city card" is a really good deal. The card gets you into many of the sights and bus transportation and also a river cruise. Also, Berchtesgaden is only about 30 minutes from Anif and the autobahn entrance is only about 1 km from the B&B.
