Too little time in Austria, where to go?

We thought it would be great to visit Prague and Vienna for ten days before going to France in my wife's family next sept/oct. We've never been to Austria and we thought we could do 2 nights in Vienna and 2 nights in Innsbruck. But the more we learn, the more confused we get. Salzburg, Hallstat, Graz, Hochosterwitz castle, Grossglockner... I realize we don't have enough time and we're pretty much passing by. The idea was to travel by train/bus but I wonder if I shouldn't rent a car in Vienna for our last couple days. My wife wanted Innsbruck because she says Tyrol is beautiful. Today, I feel I have to choose between Salzburg and Innsbruck. Visiting Austria but ignoring Salzburg? Renting a place north of Innsbruck? Renting a car and going to Graz, Hochosterwitz, Hallstat, Salzburg? I got a feeling that last option might kill us.

We leave tuesday morning to Strasbourg/Nancy but I'd like to take the scenic train route which goes through the Arlberg Pass. Is it feasible from Innsbruck as well as Salzburg?

Last thing, are there different train routes from Vienna to Innsbruck? Is it a scenic ride?

Thanks for any input. And if you want to add more places to visit to add to my confusion, be my guest.

Given the time of year there might be weather concerns (someone local will have to chime in) but if so maybe you first need to decide if in your limited time you want to spend the majority of your time in cities or outdoors in the mountains and lakes and in ice and salt mines. If the weather is amenable to either then you have options but it’s hard to do it all. Unless your big into museums and churches, and the weather permits, I’d opt for mountains, lakes, views, etc. — could be beautiful that time of year.

Everything you listed is beautiful and worthwile visiting. It is impossible to do all given the short time frame of ten days and the required travel time between the places, so you must decide what to skip.

In my opinion you should reduce to three different items. Because your wife wants to see Tirol, you should choose Prague (3 days), Vienna (5 days), and Innsbruck (2 days). (If I would do this trip I would rather go to Salzburg instead of Innsbruck as I am more interested in culture and history than in mountains.)

The standard train connection from Vienna to Innsbruck is via Salzburg (4:14 hours). The alternative (much more scenic) route across the mountains is via Villach, Lienz, and Fortezza requires 2 changes and will cost you virtually a full day (10:11 hours).

Travel time by train from Salzburg or Innsbruck to Strasbourg is somewhat around 6 hours. If you want to go over the Arlberg Pass when departing from Salzburg it would add another 2 hours travel time.

Thank you dove and wmt!

I think we’ll skip the scenic route between Vienna and Innsbruck as I already have too little time. Salzburg was also my preference and my wife would be fine with it if we were to forget about Innsbruck.

Thank you for the details about the train, wmt. We will definitely add a couple hours to go to Strasbourg.

I should have added that my itinerary is actually 3 nights in Prague, 3 nights in Brno, 2 in Vienna + 2 more. We will spend one day in Brno visiting the caves and Olomouc.

Your itinerary looks a bit strange for me. 3 nights in Brno is an overkill. The most interesting item in Brno is the Villa Tugendhat; make sure that you book a guided tour in time. The rest of the city you can walk through in half day. Compared to Prague you won't be very impressed. Spending more nights in Prague than in Vienna doesn't make sense in my opinion. Prague gets a bit overrated compared to Vienna. Be sure to attend an evening show of a Black Theater in Prague; this is really unique.

We booked a tour from Prague to Bohemian and Saxon National Parks. We also want to go to Cesky Krumlov. So there isn't that much time left to visit Prague.

From Brno, we're spending one day visiting caves (half a day) and another in Olomouc. But you're right, I could skip something here and cut one night.

That would give me one more day in Vienna.

No every theater in Prague is a black light theater, and even some of those claiming to be have lukewarm or non-black-light performances. The tradition of the black light theater started about 60 years ago in Prague and became very popular, invented by Jiří Srnec. In the meantime numerous places offer black light performances, a lot of them are pure rip-offs targeted at ignorant tourists.

I have not been in Prague for the last three years, but as far as I can guess the performance "Antologia" seems to be the most authentic. ("Aspects of Alice" got rather bad reviews, by the way.)

I had noticed that Antologia was scheduled during our visit and had taken a look on Youtube.

Thank you for taking the time, wmt! Very much appreciated.

Max, you are welcome. Should you attend Antologia in Prague, please let me know how it was.
