Thermal Baths - Salzburg

Interested in visiting thermal baths. Is Salzburg a good base?

I don’t know of any in the immediate vicinity of Salzburg. I certainly have never used any.

I go to a lot of thermae all over Germany, or at least all over the bits of Germany that I regularly get to, and they vary a great deal in the way that you can experience them.

Perhaps it would be best if you were to explain what you would hope to find so I can perhaps guide you towards a location that most closely meets what you were looking for.

Within two hours of Salzburg you can be in one of the worlds largest thermae developments and also many small town facilities.

Are you looking for the sort of experience that Rick Steves describes in Baden-Baden?

As Laura B pointed out ... Budapest. About 2.5 hours from Vienna.

It's been part of the culture since the Ottoman occupation. There are three with facilities that date to the 16th century, and many with incredible architecture. Here is some more

All temporarily closed ... obviously.

Thanks for the information and yes, I am looking for exactly like the ones Rick recommends in Baden Baden. I have been there and it is really great. For this trip, I am flying into Munich and then going to Salzburg so looking for recommendations in that area. I have also been to the baths in Budapest. Any recommendations in Germany would also be appreciated.

I used the spa town of Bad Ishcl a few years ago as a base town to visit Austria. It's famous for the water and also as as a gateway to the Alpine lakes and mountains of the Salzkammergut region, including Hallstat. Lots of other beautiful places close, within an hour train or bus trip. Also for the summer home of Habsburg Emperor Franz Joseph l . It is a beautiful town , I would love to go back one day.

Which of the two methods at the Baden-Baden baths did you prefer?

Caracalla Spa in Baden Baden was great.

Found these spas on the Austria websites. Has anyone visited them?
"Felsentherme Bad Gastein" is famous for its beautiful setting and the "classic" touch of the Gasteinertal valley. The spa itself is located at an altitude of 1,000 metres above sea level.
The "Alpentherme Gastein" in Bad Hofgastein s nearby and set in a similarly scenic area. It prides itself to be one of the most modern spas in Europe and consists of six different "Health- and Adventureworlds" - sounds almost like Disneyland.

I think now I have a few options. Thanks for your replies.

Therme Erding is northeast of Munich https://www.therme-erding.de/en/ and is fairly near the airport.

My favourite of all, it is well served by the S-Bahn from Munich and has loads of free parking. It is huge, with every conceivable way to enjoy hot water, cold water, waves, lazy river, steam and saunas.

It even has its own hotel.

It is part of a small chain of similar but smaller facilities around Germany.

I am unaware of any near Salzburg. Perhaps further south in Bad Gastein region. However, if I recall, Austria has closed all such spots due to the pandemic. You may want to keep an eye open for this even if you are planning well in advance.
