I have a special needs teenager that will be traveling with our family in Vienna. She tires very easily so I try to keep walking time between attractions to 15-20mins maximum. We are staying across the street from the opera house and was wanting to know if the Kunsthistorisches Museum is walkable or should we opt for a tram or the underground?
What hotel or what address? To say across the street from the Opera House could be a large area.
Its only about a 10 minute walk, or hop on the Opernring tram and go to the next stop.
We are staying at the Abieshomes Vienna Opera Apartments on Elisabethstabe.
Looks very walkable. 4 city blocks.
BTW, that funny letter that looks like a "B" in italics is a double "ss". Someone with a much better understanding of German can explain the fine details. So the apartment is on Elisabethstrasse.
It began as a combination of the old "long s", which looks like ſ and also existed in English until the late eighteenth century, with the normal small s, to indicate a particular sound in German. Then they merged into a single letter.
That " ß" is pronounced as " s-tset" Before the Schreibreform movement became common practice, ie adopted in 1997, there were definitely certain rules dictating when the "ß" letter was to be used. Unfortunately, the movement changed some of those rules....if you want to follow them. On German typewriters and German key board computers, the " ß" has a separate key...very nice. You can safely spell "Elisabethstraße" this way. I notice in Austria and in Vienna the " ß " is used more often in public signs, etc ..maybe a subjective feeling compared to its usage in Germany.
