The one Salzburg must see

If you were going to be in Salzburg for 4-5 hours at the end of November, what is the one thing you would tell someone not to miss? I want to see the Christmas market too but I know my husband won't want to spend our entire time there. We'll be arriving by train so nothing to far from the station since we'll be on foot.

Thank you!

It is a pretty small town. You should use the hop on hop on bus that picks up at the train station. The sites are not that close from the train station; if you don't have a map on a phone with gps while walking you might lose time by going the wrong direction.

Rick Steves has a Salzburg walking tour that you can download on your phone. It’s about an hour and is very worthwhile. Pay to go inside the cathedral, have coffee and a piece of Sacher cake, walk the market stalls and if time, pay to visit the castle.

Note that if you go to the cathedral there is a big Christmas market right outside.

Hi Georgiatraveler,
In case you were wondering if there is an Atlanta Travel group, there is one! Our next meeting is November 23rd. You can pm me for more details or look us up under the Travel group meeting tab.

I will be in Salzburg the first week of December. My friends tell me the market there is magical!
Enjoy!

I think the one thing to do in Salzburg with 4-5 hours is just to enjoy the buildings and the vibe. I love Salzburg. As already mentioned, the Rick Steves walk (in the guide or downloaded to your phone) is very good.

A walk from the train station to the Old Town along the river offers very nice views of the Old Town and the fortress; it takes about 30 minutes to get from the train station to Mozartplatz. I personally would take Saint Julien Straße toward the river, cross the river using its bridge, and then walk the pedestrian path on the Old Town side of the river. That gives you a tiny taste of a slightly gritty area of the new town (the few blocks on Saint Julien Straße) prior to seeing gorgeous views of the Old Town. The Christmas Market is fairly large. I like it a lot.

There are nice views over the city from the fortress, as well as a small, cute (but uninspiring) Christmas market there.

Thanks everyone! Our one trip to Salzburg before was 9+ years ago and we just walked around the city. This time our daughter will be with us and we want to make it a worthwhile day trip. I will check those suggestions.

Judy I would love to attend but we'll be in Germany that weekend :)

The station is across the river and a little bit of a walk downhill (up coming back).

The old town is linked by buses.
