From the website of the Vienna Collection of Ancient Instruments, it is a part of the Kunsthistorisches Museum. Does this mean that a KHM ticket will also get me into the instrument collection? (I do not remember seeing a way to order a separate ticket.) I am considering buying the KHM combo ticket that includes the Imperial Treasury (KHM and Instruments on one day, and the Imperial Treasury on another day). If this includes the instrument collection that seems to be my best bet. Thanks.
The musical instrument collection is housed in the Neue Burg ( entrance on The Heldenplatz ) As I recall , there are a number of combination tickets with different configurations . If you get your tickets at the Kunsthistoriches location , you can purchase the one that suits you . The one that suited me in 2013 was - Kunsthistoriches , Schatzkammer ( Treasury ) and Neue Burg ( musical instruments ) Check for current offerings .
Sitting here in my living room on a dreary and raw afternoon , I am taking one of my frequent return visits to Vienna via my collection of pictures . While you did not ask , this place ( as long as you are visiting The Neue Burg ) is worth a visit - Part of the Austrian National Library housed in the Neue Burg , is The Prunksaal , the original center of the old Imperial Library . The historical displays and art are excellent , and the rooms are stunning . Try to include this oft ignored site in Vienna - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austrian_National_Library
It’s dreary and raw in Vienna too. This time of year is rough and I say thanks every day for the extra few minutes of sunlight.
Not to despair , Emily . Spring is not far , and even in Winter , Vienna's charms are always palpable . To cheer your day - https://youtu.be/iYw3tF5plR0
According to the guidebook update page on Rick's site,
I assume that all museum collections are covered by the Kunsthistorisches Museum ticket. According to the
Kunsthistorisches Museum web site, these are the collections:
- Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection
- Collection of Greek and Roman Antiquities
- Picture Gallery
- Kunstkammer Wien
- The Cradle of the Museum
- Coin Collection
- The Library
- Collection of Historic Musical Instruments
- Imperial Armoury
- Ephesos Museum
So to answer your question, I assume that the € 16.00 tickets covers all of the collections in the above list and the € 22.00 tickets covers that and adds the Imperial Treasury. At least, that is what I am planning for my upcoming trip.
I just saw a discrepancy between Rick's update to his guidebook and the Kunsthistorisches Museum web site. It's only closed on Monday. I hope Rick checks his update and updates the update. (My head is spinning now.)
Tue – Sun, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Thu, 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.
June - August and 15.10.2019 - 19.1.2020 open daily
Rick's update refers to the New Palace museum complex. The Kunsthistorisches Museum (KHM) is not part of this complex, it is housed in a separate, dedicated building across the Ring boulevard.
Since I made my post, I emailed the KHM for clarification. The KHM ticket does indeed include the musical instrument collection, but I was informed that several rooms (mainly the piano rooms) will be closed for renovations from the end of April to October 2019. Since that includes my travel dates, I have decided to skip the musical instruments altogether—this will be one excuse for a return trip!
