The Heuriger

Can I get some information from folks who have been to Vienna about the wine taverns in the city limits. Are there any recommendations as far as which might be the best for ambience. I'd like to take my wife will work in Vienna and I'm just looking for a location was great features and is easy to get to from the city.

There are a bunch, they are all in a row, and you can pick one as you get there. We went to 3 in 2011. They were lots of fun - it was June. We found that bus transport from town was reliable. If you are planning a drinking trip, I'd take the bus. We were able to catch a bus at 11:30 PM. They continue to run well into the night, just less frequently. We asked a local guy what his favorite was, and went to that, but I can't remember the name. You will probably enjoy any of them.

There are several suburbs with heurigen. The most famous is Grinzing.

This is a very nice Heurigen with sufficient indoor capacity in case of bad weather, and easily reachable by public transport (metro, tram): http://10ermarie.at/
It is located in Ottakring (16th borough), off the beaten track for tourists (19th borough [e.g. Grinzing]).

By the way, this is believed to be the oldest Heurigen in Vienna. Closed on Sundays. There you get a delicious variant of "Wiener Schnitzel", called "Surschnitzel", i.e. the meat is seasoned with a special marinade before being breaded and fried.

The homepage is available in German, only. Beware: In the section "Anreise" (how to get there) replace all references to tram line no. 2 with line no. 44. There was a switch of tram lines about one month ago, and they have not updated the information, yet.
