We will be driving from Salzburg to Val Gardena (Ortisei) in June. I see two possible routes.
1) The short route via Innsbruck.
OR
2) The long route via the gross glocker high alpine road / lienz.
Is route #2 worth the long drive as It looks like it may take more than 6-7 hours. Can someone suggest me a nice route, i am a but confused.
Route #1 is 95% Autobahn (highway), and not that scenic (about 3 hours).
Route #2 is twice as long and much more beautiful. The Großglockner High Alpine Road is spectacular, but if you are unexperienced driving hairpin after hairpin you should calculate more time. And you should not have children in the car who get sick easily. :-)
The driving times given above are without considering any breaks or photo stops.
I think I've given my previous advice not to do #2 with kids but I'll also add that there is about a €30 toll to pay.
Route 1 may well be autobahns but the mountains and scenery are still delightful.
