Suggestions for Vienna/Munich/?? itinerary next summer

Hi gang,

I would appreciate some suggestions on my trip next summer. I will fly into Munich (on a Sunday) to attend a performance at the opera the following day (Monday) and then have a week before the next performance. I was thinking I would go to Vienna (my first time) for a few days in between. I'd like to maximize this week and would love other suggestions to add on. (note that I've been to Salzburg before, and would like to explore something new)

Thanks!

Todd

Yes, I guess it would have been a good idea to give you idea of my interests! I will probably be traveling solo. I enjoy museums and history; art galleries; exploring cities on foot; music or other cultural events; not big on churches. Not a huge "foodie" either.

Thanks!

Hello Todd,
Vienna is a lovely city to visit. There are many wonderful sites: Vienna Opera house, St. Stephens Cathedral, Hofburg Treasury, Imperial Apartments, Kunsthistorishches, Schonbrunn Palace, Haus der Musik to name a few. Since you are a music lover you could visit the Zentralfriedhof (cemetery) where Beethoven, Schubert and others famous composers are buried. If the weather is nice rent a bike and ride the Ringstrasse visiting the different parks or a leisurely ride along the Danube. In the summers Vienna has a lot of free or really affordable outdoor concerts, opera, symphonies, movies, plays etc. You can also get last minute tickets to many classical concerts. You could take a day trip cruise down the Danube and visit the Wachau Valley and Melk. I hope this helps you plan a lovely visit to Vienna!

@ todd,

i was in Munich several weeks ago. there are several choices for you, but it would depend on what floats your boat or calls to you.

After Munich i took the train to Prague. I thought that Prague was really cool, old. I would say that almost all the places in Europe have the things you want. At least for the places i have been so far. Vienna was really beautiful and cool too. Many museums to choose from along with the Spanish Riding School if you're into horses and history.

Since you want to "maximize" your time, i would look for places close or close to your liking. If i remember right, Prague was a 4+ hour train ride from Munich. The bus is suppose to be a tad faster, but i like trains and the freedom to move around, so i took it.

happy trails.

Hi,

Vienna is a nice city to explore solo. Interested in history, then definitely the Zentralfriedhof not only for the graves of the various composers but the WW I and II and the Soviet occupation are part of the vast Zentralfriedhof premises. I suggest also the Army Museum (the Heerresgeschichtliches Museum), just put with its bias on certain exhibits or lack of them, Schloss Schoenbrunn, walk all the way to Gloriette after seeing chateau, Belvedere not only for the art exhibits but also historical apts where the fated Archduke F Ferdinand and his wife lived. The ten years that saw Vienna divided up after 1945 ( like Berlin ) is marked by the Soviet war memorial not far from the Schwarzenberg Platz, both sites worth going to.

For something nearby and new I suggest Eisenstadt, the capital of Burgenland. You'll see the Hungarian influence and style, since Burgenland was traditionally Hungarian, not Austrian.
