need suggestion for Austria in Nov-Dec

Hi

I need suggestion on where to visit in Austria during late Nov- early Dec. I will be starting my trip in Munich and finish in Vienna (10 days).

Also I plan to drive and wonder if there will be snow on the road during this period?

Thank you.

On the major roads, no, unless you decide to drive during an actual storm. I wouldn't expect much snow except at higher elevations in the mountains... and for the most part, you probably won't be driving in there. Most of the roads in the Alpine regions run through the valleys, which likely won't be quite cold enough yet to support much snow accumulation.

Also, make sure you understand the cost of picking up a car in one country and dropping it off in another. You can pay a substantial fee.

Finally, if you do decide to rent for the entire time, pick up the rental car as you leave Munich and drop it off when arriving in Vienna. Both cities are notoriously bad placed to drive, but have excellent public transportation systems.

Probably no snow on the roads. Our last 2 trips (2010 and 2013) in late Nov./early Dec. had a few days with some snow. Roads are cleared very quickly. The Christmas markets in Munich, Salzburg, Berchtesgaden, along the Wolfgangsee, Innsbruck, Vienna, etc. should all be open. This was the primary reason for our last 2 visits, as we had been to all (except Vienna) many times before. You could drop the car in Freilassing, Germany, a suburb of Salzburg if you're heading to/near Salzburg before Vienna.

The Christmas Markets will be in full gear by late November. I'd include a couple nights in or near Innsbruck. It's magical, as are most towns and villages, at this time of year. Stalls lining the streets selling a variety of goods, food stands, hot drinks, the smell of chestnuts roasting, fires to warm up by, Christmas lights, decorations, music, etc. the holiday atmosphere is incredible. That said, our favorites, especially at his time of year, are Innsbruck, Berchtesgaden/Salzburg area and the towns/villages along the Wolfgangsee, 30 minutes south of Salzburg. Berchtesgaden and Salzburg are 30 minutes apart by car.
