We will be in Vienna for 3 days. My son really wants to see the Austrian Alps. Has anyone done either a one day tour bus or solo train from Vienna to see the alps? If so, please recommend. If by train, where would you go?

Vienna is actually quite a ways from the high Austrian Alps, too far for a day trip. I see from your posting history, you may be in Salzburg as well. That will be a much better location for an Alpine day trip.
The mountain range closest to Vienna is the Schneeberg (snow mountain) area, where are several hiking trails and mountain huts.

It easily reachable by train: You take an express train (RailJet or EuroCity) from Vienna main station to Wr. Neustadt where you change to a local train to Puchberg am Schneeberg. The total ride is 1:25 hours.
In Puchberg you have the choice of walking up to the summit (elevation 6800 ft), i.e. for the tougher people, or usually you take the cog railway up to Austria's highest train station. This shortens the time to get to the summit considerably. The ride on the mountain train from Puchberg to Hochschneeberg is 42 minutes.

Maybe a private flight from Flugplatz Wiener Neustadt Ost?
