Stopping in Hallstatt, while enroute to Saltzburg from Vienna

We had planned 2 full days in Vienna, then taking a train from there to Saltzbug. Is it practical to leave Vienna early and spend a few hours in Hallstatt along the way and get in early evening in Saltzburg?

Yes it is possible. About 6 hours in Hallstatt. Finding a place to stash your bags could be an issue.

Hallstadt can reached by train--getting off at the Bad Ischl stop. You then catch a train down to the Hallstadt stop and then a ferry called The Stefanie across the lake to Hallstadt.
The other way to get there is by bus to Bad Ischl and take the train down as mentioned above.
It appears to be a little bit of a hassle.

The train from Vienna to Salzburg does not go via Bad Ischl. You get off the train at Attnang-Puchheim and there you change to train which goes to Hallstatt. It is direction to Obertraun-Dachsteinhoehlen. Bad Ischl is few stops before Hallstatt and you won't get off train there (unless you want spa treatment).

scott,

While it might be feasible to visit Hallstatt on the way from Vienna to Salzburg, it's not really practical as it wouldn't allow much time to look around.

One of the shortest trips from Vienna to Hallstatt is a departure at 07:55, arriving 11:24 (time 3H:29M, one change at Attnang-Pucheim). Add to that waiting time and then the 20 minute (or so) trip across the lake in Stefanie. You'd also have to haul your luggage with you as the Hallstatt station is unmanned, and I don't recall seeing any baggage lockers there. There may be a baggage room at the T.I. but not sure on that point. There may also be Lockers at the foot of the Salt Mine Funicular, but that's at the opposite end of town from the boat docks so some walking would be required.

The ongoing trip to Salzburg will again have the ~20 minute boat trip and then a rail trip of between 2H:16M - 3H:00M, again with at least one change (plus waiting times of course). The last departure of the day from Hallstatt appears to be at 18:48.

Depending on how many days you'll be in Salzburg, you could also take a day trip by Van to Hallsatt. Check Bob's Special Tours for further information.

The poster who so kindly described the timeframe involved is "spot on". Quite frankly, we found Hallstatt to be a big disappointment. It was packed with bus loads of day trippers and quite frankly,I've seen nicer sites closer to home.

I stayed in Hallstatt on the lake and I thought the scenery was beautiful, spent Three nights and day tripped to Bad Ischl and the Salt Mine, also the Salt Mine that was in the movie Monuments Men and we were not over run by tour buses in May.Didn't realize that Toronto was so scenic.

Regarding the tour bus crowds, I didn't notice much of a problem with that in September although it's been a few years so the situation may have changed. In any case, the buses are usually gone by about 16:00 and Hallstatt returns to a more "tranquil" state in the evenings.

Two things.

If you haven't been in Hallstatt in a few years in September then you would be shocked. We were there in September 2015 and you could barely manage to move along the main street. Once the buses left, it was peaceful.

As for scenery in Toronto, have you been here or in this neck of the woods? The number one attraction in Canada is Niagara Falls which is very close and that's the tip of the iceberg.
