Staying in the City Center of Vienna

I am traveling to Vienna in October. Is it best to stay right inside the city? We won't have a car and will rely on public transportation. I'd appreciate any ideas about places to stay.

Yes, the central areas (districts 1-9) are the best places to stay. If you want specific recommendations, give more details about who is "we" (how many, children or adults), your budget, and if you have any specific wishes or requirements (elevator, A/C, etc).

Thanks so much! There are six of us traveling together. We're all adults - two couples, and two single women (who want separate beds but don't mind sharing a room). I would love specific recommendations. We're looking for reasonably-priced accommodations. No special requirements.

I did the RS Munich, Salzburg and Vienna tour in December and we stayed at the Hotel Mailberger Hof. http://www.mailbergerhof.at/en-us

It's located off of a pedestrian only shopping street and is reasonably close to public transport. If I ever go back to Vienna, I would stay there again. Enjoy your trip!

We were in Vienna in October 2015 and really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Rathaus on Langestrasse. It was about a five minute walk to the museum quarter. The neighborhood restaurants recommended by the staff were excellent, especially Fromme Helene and Marienhof.

One thing I loved about this hotel is that they would "wash and fold" a load of laundry for 12 Euros. It was so nice to come back after a day of sightseeing to a hamper full of neatly folded and clean clothes waiting for us in our room.

Four of us (two couples) spent 8 days in Vienna last September and loved it. We had a home exchange apartment in the 3d district, not far from the Mitte train station. We walked everywhere from here, but it was a 30-minute walk to most locations inside the Ringstrasse. There were bus and tram options close by but we prefer to walk.

If you could find something in the 1st district you might like that better. Vienna is a fantastic city with much to offer!

I stayed at Classic Hotel Wien in July a couple of years ago and was very pleased. Good location a couple of blocks from the metro but also walking distance to main tourist area if you're a walker (maybe about 2km). Nice neighborhood with some restaurants and shops. Very nice and accommodating staff, elevator, A/C,etc, breakfast buffet. It was a little higher class than I normally go for but they offered a special - pay for 3 nights get 4th night free - so it worked out for my budget. I have recommended it before and others have enjoyed it as well.

Absolutely, stay inside the city, and in Vienna, inside the Ring Strasse. I really like Hotel Austria--clean, reasonable prices, helpful and kind staff, 5 minute walk from St. Stephens and wonderful, huge breakfast included in the room rate. I've stayed here twice. http://www.hotelaustria-wien.at/

stay inside the city, and in Vienna, inside the Ring Strasse.

Most important is to choose a place with excellent access to public transport (3 minutes walk or less).

There is no necessity to stay in the 1st city borough, but as said in one of the inner boroughs (up to 9th).

I would suggest Pension Suzanne, off of Kärntnerstraße, around from the Opera House (Staatsoper). The closest subway station is a major junction point, Karlsplatz, further down on Kärntnerstraße is the next station, ca 10-12 mins, closest to Karlsplatz, "Stephansplatz."
