We are touring through Austria and are considering 4 nights in Linz in order to day trip places between Salzburg and Vienna. Any advice on where to stay or restaurants?
For restaurants see this list: https://wanderlog.com/list/geoCategory/198888/where-to-eat-best-restaurants-in-linz
This is my favorite sight, whenever I happen to be in Linz, this is my number-one place to go to: https://ars.electronica.art/center/en/
Also worth noting is the Pöstlingbergbahn, the world's steepest adhesion (non-cog) tramway.
Touring as with a car? Any particular reason for basing in Linz?
We fly to Vienna and spend a few days there. Then want to see the Wauchu Valley, meuthauson Camp, and Salzburg but we don't want to change hotels every nite. so plan to travel from Vienna to Linz in a rental car, do day trips from there, then end in Salzburg where we’ll fly to Paris.
Consider Melk instead of Linz if you want to see the Wachau Valley. I have spent 4 nights total in Melk, biked along the Danube twice, visited the Melk Abbey, Durnstein Castle and the Venus of Willendorf Museum, done a boat ride on the Danube. It's lovely and relaxing. I found Linz to be bigger and busier. I didn't spend the night but I did day trip there and visit the Castle Museum which is interesting, but I found the things to see and do near Melk more to my liking. If you did that, you could visit Mauthausen en route to Salzburg.
strong textThank you all for your messages. Upon further reflection we agree with you Linz is not the vibe we're after even though its a central location for our itinerary. We've booked a room in Melk instead.
Even if you are not staying there (and I would stay there), be sure to have dinner at the hotel restaurant zur Post. I'd recommend a reservation.
