We will be spending a week in this region the first part of June. We want mainly to hike and relax, but will also do a few “tourist” things - Salt mine, Salzburg for a day, etc. We will be using public transportation. We are trying to decide between these two places. Thanks for your help.
I have stayed in St Wolfgang but have visited both and I would stay in St Gilgen, you might take a look at St Wolfgang, beautiful location on the water.
Mike
I concur with Mike that St. Wolfgang is a charming and relaxing town that you might want to consider. We hiked above the town, and there’s the cogwheel train nearby.
We took the bus from Salzburg to St. Gilgen and took the boat to St. Wolfgang. Afterwards, we took the bus/train to Melk. Both of us were really sad to leave St. Wolfgang.
Thank you, Jean and Mike. I will certainly look into St. Wolfgang.
We always stay in St. Gilgen. St. Wolfgang has turned into a total tourist circus lately. St. Gilgen is calm, lovely waterfront and good restaurants. Best transportation links as well.
