St Gilgen

We will be in the St Gilgen area for 2 nights on our way to Fussen. We have a car and (2 boys ages 5 years and 3 years). Any recommendations on what to do where to eat? Will be there this fall.

Thanks!

I assume Wolfgangsee? If the boat is running take it to all the lake cities. At St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut (could be tourist overload) take the Schafbergbahn (train) to the Schafberg. Old classic for dinner in St. Gilgen is the Hotel Gasthof zur Post. With the kids you might checkout the Brunnwind. I liked the Kirchenwirt in Strobl. This area is famous for non stop rain in the Fall (Schnürlregen). Be prepared...

Just a few other options. Boat ride and hike on and around Konigssee ( easy paths around St Bartholomew, a bit more difficult at the bottom end to Obersee - the earlier in the day the better), salt mine just south of Hallein, Werfen for the castle and ice caves.

A few miles (10 km) NE out of St. Wolfgang is a nice lake, Schwartzensee. Ample parking; a mostly flat trail around the Lake; and 2 restaurants a few minutes from parking. Hiking the whole trail might be too much for the lads, but you could do an out-and-back to suit them, and have a nice traditional lunch at one of the restaurants. I think you'll get closer lake views if you head out clockwise (by the gasthaus) from the parking lot. Although we were staying in Mondsee, breakfast at the Backerei Obauer in St. Gilgen became one of our morning favorites. http://www.obauer-brot.at/ (You'll know you're there when you see the pastries on the green shutters.)
