Spring Break in Austria

Hello. My daughter and I are coming from the US and we are interested in visiting Austria. We have about a week. Our dates are 3/8-3/15z She would like to do some skiing and I would like to combine that with seeing a city including museums food, etc. Is this feasible? What city would you recommend? What ski resort? Based on further research it sounds like flying into Munich is our best bet and then going to Innsbruck or Tyrol. Munch is also cheaper to fly to and my daughter loves Germany so a win. Do you know if you have to book skiing in advance. We just came back from skiing in NY with no lift lines and very manageable crowds but that’s not the case in my places in the states. I would like to rely solely on public transportation but other than that I am open to all suggestions. Thanks!

Forget skiing in the Salzburg region since public transportation begins in May. The other two places to ski in Austria are in Tyrol and Upper Austria: https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Austria. You might need a car for Upper Austria but I believe you can easily get around by public transportation in Tyrol.

With that said it would be ideal to fly in / out of the airports Innsbruck and Munich and sleep in Innsbruck and Salzburg.

It's really going to depend on the dates and the weather. This past year there was snow in April, but you probably are going to have to go higher up to find some, like in the Tyrol around Oztal. That means getting away from the major cities with museums, et al. and any public transport is mostly going to be bus. Switzerland may be a safer bet. Or, if they still have snow, aim for Innsbruck and ski Garmisch. The problem is that, just like in USA, you have to plan 3 months out and things change.

What is your exact schedule? Is 3/8 the date of departure in US and 3/15 the date you must be back at home?

We can leave on 3/7 and we have to be back in the US by the night of the 3/16.

So you will have 7 full days for vacation. To go to Innsbruck, Tyrol's capital, from Munich is a good idea, because Tyrol has a large number of ski resorts. If you want to have a scenic train ride, go from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchrn, and from there to Innsbruck via Seefeld.

For your timeframe skiing season is still in full swing as Easter is one month later. Here is a list of all ski resorts with their closing dates: https://www.skiresort.info/snow-reports/seasonend/austria/
