Hey friends - I’m looking for a special place to stop over on our way from Salzburg to Augsburg. It will be my wife and my anniversary and our travel friends’ honeymoon and we want to treat ourselves for one night in the alps. We were thinking near Innsbruck but we are open to any suggestions. We will have a car so anywhere will work. The big key points are it has to be in the alps and has to have a “special” feel. Good views and/or a spa are lagniappe. Aiming to keep it under $150/night but could go a little higher for the right place.

I was looking at a couple spots is Seefeld. Are there any places you’ve stayed at in either town?

Not I. I go to serious ski areas, like Soelden, Kitzbuehel, St Anton. But Seefeld and Mittenwald look pretty neat, and they are convenient to get to Augsburg and easy to get to from Salzburg. More village-like than the big resort towns.

What time of year? Are you looking for snow or summer alpine bliss? To take anything other than the autobahn from Salzburg to Augsburg is going to add some serious travel time which I wouldn't personally wouldn't want to be doing on my anniversary/honeymoon otherwise you'll get very little time at your 'special' hotel. I'd therefore be tempted to travel no more than an hour in the wrong direction from Salzburg before backtracking the next day. Let us know the time of year and we can better advise.

Regarding time of year - this will be in mid-late September. I'm not sure what that will mean for weather, but it's what we have to deal with. We aren't really looking at this as a convenient stop on the way from Salzburg to Augsburg, but more of a scenic detour. I definitely understand the concern of how much time this will add, but we're OK with it. For us, sometimes the drive is almost as fun as the destination if the scenery is good.

Check out this hotel in Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden - about a 45 minute drive from Salzburg. The hotel was lovely as was the setting in Ramsau. Google "Ramsau Germany" and you will probably get the picture of the lovely, iconic church. We were busy hiking so did not use the spa facilities, but they look nice, as does the outdoor pool. Rooms are a bit more than $150, but a lovely breakfast and dinner are included. There is also a little shop about a 5 minute walk away so you can stop there to buy a celebratory beverage for your special events. We were there this past August for 3 nights which included my birthday and my husband's and my anniversary (both with numbers ending in 0/5). I couldn't have asked for a better place to celebrate.
