I have been watching YouTube videos on reaching the SOM field where the movie begins. It shows the Sound of Music Trail in the videos.
Can anyone tell me if you need to take the trail or if there is an easier way to get to the field?

If you want a good view of the meadow where the kids learn Do Re Me, go visit the ice cave at Werfen.

The Sound of Music tour company (Panoramic tours) had tours that take you to that ice cave.
Just outside the cave, if you look to your right, towards Salzburg, you will see the castle that is the background of the meadow in the movie. I believe the beginning of the Sound of Music was also right near there. Here's a picture from the same mountain with the ice cave, but a bit closer to Salzburg. Behind the castle is the meadow.

The last I heard was that the field is private property and they are discouraging anyone from visiting. We were there in '18 and respected their wishes. Still a nice view without getting to the precise location.

The trail is in Werfren, and it's open to the public. It's a fun hike with surprises along the way. We enjoyed it!
