Solo Female Traveler (late 40s) - Heading to Vienna & Salzburg

Hi all, I'm traveling to Austria at the end of July/early August and would love hotel recommendations in the city centers. I've read about some Pensions, but would prefer breakfast be included even if similar to a petit dejeuner.

I don't need extravagance just well situated, good staff, and wifi connectivity. :-) A couple of places sounded interesting: Levante Parliament and Hotel Kärntnerhof.

Recommendations please, and feel free to mention any noteworthy restaurants/cafes as well.

Thanks much!

What cities/towns do you plan on visiting and for how long will you be staying in them?

Most all pensions and hotels in Vienna and Salzburg offer generous breakfasts. In Rick's Vienna/Salzburg book, the listings will specify "no breakfast," when that is the case, such as for K & T Boarding House. See www.hargita.at for a cheap single room and 5 euros to add breakfast.

Thank you both for responding.

Nestor, I'll be ~5 days in each city--Vienna and Salzburg.

Hi,

Great that you're going to these two cities. . Expect Vienna to be hot. One hotel/Pension I can recommend (in the centre as you prefer) is basically half a block or so from Cafe Sacher and very close to the Staatsoper (the State Opera House)....Hotel-Pension Suzanne at Walfischgasse 4. The price includes breakfast.

On restaurants: one right in the area (close to the Cafe Sacher) is Lubella at Kärntnerstraße 32. If you want a buffet style, where the daily special is cooked for you, ie not precooked, next to Lubella is Rosenberger. Both establishments are not pricey.

This restaurant is closer to Westbahnhof....Schnitzelwirt on Neubaugasse 52, close to where Mariahilferstraße and Neubaugasse intersect. Of the three I liked Schnitzelwirt the best, also it's the least expensive of the three.

Hi Jody, I stayed at the Hotel Golden Krone, which is now Hotel Krone. I really liked the location. The breakfast was great, the people were great and there were some good restaurants near by.

We always stay at K&T Boardinghouse @ 79 euros (double) when in Vienna. They've got 2 locations on MariaHilferStrasse across the street from each other. Tina and Kaled are great hosts and friends of Rick Steves.
We stayed in their newest location in April, and we were 100' from the Neubaugasse Metro Station entrance. Its just one and two metro stops to the palaces and the St. Stephens Dom.

Check out RS suggestions for good value. We stayed in a B&B outside of old town Salzburg and it was great. Clean, big room at a good price for 4 of us. We did take the 15 minute bus ride into old town but that just added to the experience. If you use Trip Advisor you can read how other travelers rate the different pensions or B&B's.

Hi,

Spending 5 days in Wien gives you time on tours and exploring on your own. The city is easy to get around by public transportation. The same amount of time is Salzburg gives you a chance to do a day r/t. I suggest going to Bad Ischl, take the bus from Salzburg Hbf (train station), ca. 1.5 hrs. go to the Kaiservilla if you want to see something important historically, esp in light of this year. .
