Snow in early october?

I was wondering if any parts of Austria get any snow in first half of October? The reason I ask this is because I plan on driving around Austria without any experience driving in snow at all, and am wondering if I would need any snow chains etc to be prepared.

Our itinerary would include places like: Fussen, Lech, Seefeld, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Hallstatt and Vienna. I am worried about Lech and Seefeld the most.
Thanks!

Snow can and does fall at high altitudes at all times of the year, but almost never accumulates at lower altitude (where you would drive) any earlier than November. Any snowfall that early in the autumn won't accumulate on the roads. More than likely, it would melt into rain before it even hits the ground.

Hi,

We've been to everywhere on your list, except Lech, a few times during a number of trips anywhere from early to late October. Driving in snow never even came to my mind. I wouldn't be concerned. Not saying it's impossible, but very unlikely. During our 50+ nights in Austria and Bavaria during early to late October the last 12 years, our average weather was very good overall. I'd figure on daytime temps in the 60's, maybe even low 70's and chilly nights and early mornings.

In early October, 1994, between Vienna and Krems, I did experience snow that slushed the roadway enough to make it slippery, but it did not last to the next day. If that happens, I don't recommend putting on your Christmas tape and singing loudly, as it can distract from the task of driving.

Snow tires are required by law on cars in Austria between Nov. 1 and April 15. Those dates should tell you something.

The areas you mention are also not particularly high elevations and I think it is very unlikely that you will see now except on the highest peaks. If it does snow (especially at the beginning of the season) the snow plow drivers are so overly eager that they start plowing before anything really hits the ground. I really wouldn't worry.
