Smaller hotels in Salzburg and Vienna

My family and I are looking for hotels in Salzburg and Vienna at the end of December (I know late to the game). Any suggestions for lesser known hotels or boutigues in good areas? Convenience is key.

In September we wanted a hotel near the train station in Salzburg, so we chose Hotel IMLAUER & Bräu. It was convenient for what we needed this visit, and it had a good restaurant.

Looking for one or two rooms for your family of two adults and two teen/tween boys? Rooms for 4 and adjoining rooms are a little tougher to find in Euro hotels than in US.

On suggestion for Vienna is a private family room (4 or 6 bunk beds & ensuite) at the Wombat Hostel https://www.wombats-hostels.com/vienna. Located near the Naschmarkt and close to a stop on the U4 U-Bahn line. Easy 15 minute walk to the ring road.

If convenience means access to transit, in Vienna, if arriving or departing by air, then a hotel in Landstrasse would put you close to the Wien Mitte station, with access to the two airport trains.

About 6 weeks ago, stayed at Salzburg Elefant Hotel. Look and judge, but we liked it. Good location, smaller, good room and service.

What are your dates? I’m happy to make some recommendations after seeing what’s still available (unlikely anything recommended here is available at this point)

I checked a few end of December dates on my recommendation. Stupid expensive (but it is Austria i guess), but available.

You are in luck, the two hotels listed above (Salzburg and Vienna) both have rooms available in late December. But I am in a bit of sticker shock.

It would be very good to have your exact dates, but I have plugged in Dec. 27 - 31 to see what is available in Vienna on booking.com.

My recommendations for smaller hotels in a reasonable price range which are well connected to public transportation and/or walking in pleasant areas of the city:

Hotel Indigo - Great location right by the U4 subway line and near the Naschmarkt. Very new hotel. Lots of my business visitors stay here and like it. Great local restaurants nearby.

Imperial Riding School - Not really a small hotel, but just recently re-opened in a historic building. Excellent breakfast and an indoor swimming pool. Very convenient and walkable to the Ring. Family and business guests stay here routinely and are pleased.

Austria Trend Savoyen - My parents have stayed here on numerous occasions. Great European, local chain. Building and rooms are lovely as is the breakfast.

These options are approx. $350/night which is what you will pay for a holiday period.

We loved the Alstadt Hotel Weisse Taube in Salzburg. Wonderful hotel and right around the corner from the Christmas Markets. The hotel is in a quiet area, so no street/market noise at all.

We also liked our stay at the Weisse Taube some time ago. The host spent more than an hour on his phone helping us arrange a reservation in crowded Munich. Very kind, helpful and excellent location in Salzburg . Our room was comfortable and a nice breakfast was included. We took great advantage of the Salzburg City Pass during our visit. Safe travels.

Thank you everyone for the help. Our ideal dates based on the hotel we have in Neustift would have to be Dec, 28-30 Salzburg and dec. 30-jan. 1 Vienna.
Thank you!!

You may have found a hotel by now but I thought I might make a suggestion for a lovely Salzburg hotel; unique, affordable, great breakfast and centrally located.
It's the Gästehaus im Priesterseminar Salzburg. It's a https://gaestehaus-priesterseminar-salzburg.at/en/

The hotel / guest house is operated by the Archdiocese of Salzburg. Overlooking a lovely green town square, the venue has an internal cloistered courtyard, is located in the centre of Salzburg and is set in a Baroque building next to the historic Trinity Church, a 5-minute walk from Mirabell Palace and Gardens. It's unique and may not suit everyone but I suggest that anyone visiting Salzburg check it out...
