Small hotel or B&B in Salzburg

My husband and I will be in Salzburg in late August and I would like recommendations on a small hotel or B&B in central Salzburg.

I loved Gästehaus im Priesterseminar Salzburg. It's a few steps from Mirabell Gardens on the northeast side of the Salzach River, which is easily crossed via a nearby footbridge or a nearby "regular" bridge. It's basically an inn within a still-functioning, centuries-old priest seminary. The building is gorgeous and the interior has been recently updated. Rooms are simply furnished and without a television. There is a common area with a kitchen, washer, dryer, tv, and free Wi-fi (no wi-fi in rooms). It has a beautiful courtyard. Breakfast has good variety (meats, cheeses, boiled eggs, fruit, vegetables, breads, yogurt, cereal, and homemade jams that are all locally sourced). It does NOT have air conditioning. We were there in July last summer and had a rare-for-Salzburg 90 degree (F) day but we slept okay. The best part is the price, which is inexpensive for Salzburg. All the desk staff spoke English except the pre-8 am lady. It's ranked #6 of 60 B&B's/Inns in Salzburg on TripAdvisor, so others seem to like it too.

We stayed at the Hotel Mozart a year ago January and would stay there again. Not so much a small hotel but not a big hotel with a very helpful front desk. Pretty centrally located a short walk to old town, Mirabell Gardens/Palace, and a 1 km walk to the train station.

You could take the #2 bus from the airport to the Hotel Mozart but the taxi cost wasn't high enough to be memorable. We were on holiday with ski bag and gear.

My recollection is that its a 4 star hotel by Austrian standards , the room was big, it had a lift and the breakfast was quite nice. I may I've over consumed the Austrian breads/pastries but the fresh fruit (in January) gave me some immunity.

Added note re pricing. Looked up my booking details:

Double room Standard Zimmer: Arrival: 19 January 2014 Departure: 22
January 2014- 3nights 1 Double room Standard Zimmer: EUR 76.00 per
room/per night breakfast: EUR 12.00 per person per day

We have liked Hotel Drei Kreuz and Hotel Goldenes Theatre in Salzburg. Both have helpful staff and big breakfast buffets -- coffee at Drei Kreuz was from a one-cup-at-a-time machine, at Goldenes Theatre was brought to the table in a pot. Just a few blocks apart.

We've stayed several times at the Hotel Elefant, just off of the Getreidegasse in the old town. Lovely small hotel and near everything we wanted to see.

I second the recommendation for the Hotel Elefant. They also have a nice restaurant.

It looks like you may need to move fast. My place is already completely booked for August. I'll endorse Hotel Elefant as a place that looked great when I was planning my trip. it appears to be an excellent hotel, is highly rated on TripAdvisor (RS hates TA, but I find it incredibly helpful), and is in a location that can't be beat. It was a little more than I wanted to pay -- for example, a double room in August is around €240/night when booked on their site (don't forget to enter the Promo code from the home page of the site to get 5% off when/if you make your reservation!). For comparison, my place across the river runs around €110/night for a double (when not sold out!). August is starting to fill up at Hotel Elefant, too. Good luck in your travels. I love Salzburg and the surrounding area.

....August is around €240/night when booked on their site....

August must be high season. Salzburg rooms in January were a lot cheaper, crowds were not crowds and the pickpockets seemed to winter somewhere else.

We had a 4 star double room for 2 at 76€ per night per room plus 12€ per person extra for a nice breakfast in January a year ago.

Salzburger Festspiele is July 18 - Aug 30. Big crowds. Expensive hotels!
